Moviegoers that never tire of the sound of Will Ferrell’s dulcet tones will get to hear his voice yet again this November in Dreamwork’s animated superhero comedy, Megamind.
The third official trailer for the 3D cartoon has been released online and it reveals some significant (if predictable) plot points from the film – obviously, Megamind is not a narrative-driven feature but there is one particular twist in the storyline that seems an odd choice to give away at this point.
Megamind revolves around two extraterrestrials – Ferrell’s big-headed baddie and the dashing Metro Man (voice of Brad Pitt), whose journey to Earth not so subtly parodies that of Superman. Once the two grow up, they begin a standard good vs. evil battle in which Megamind is constantly thwarted by his much adored and admired rival.
Things take a turn for the unexpected when – during one of their fights – Megamind actually defeats Metro Man. The diabolical villain then transforms an average schmo named Hal (Jonah Hill) into a super-powered being that will battle Megamind in Metro’s place. The plan naturally goes awry, with Megamind forced to become a hero and save Earth from imminent destruction.
Check out the new trailer for Megamind below (remember, it is a bit SPOILERISH):
The animation style of Megamind is cartoonish in the vein of this summer’s Despicable Me and looks to get most of its laughs through the use of visual gags and physical comedy jokes – hopefully funnier ones that the running gag from the new trailer, where characters scream loudly for no apparent reason.
Megamind is also yet another Dreamworks animated movie whose marketing campaign focuses largely on the fact that it features a star-studded voice cast. Pixar has already demonstrated that moviegoers will flock to a cartoon sold primarily on its artistic merits – like a well-crafted story and creative characters. Perhaps Dreamworks can experiment a little and try that approach with their next CGI feature.
Megamind arrives in regular, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters in the U.S. on November 5th, 2010.
