MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, the first single-player game in the core franchise in nearly two decades, is being delayed. But what's another year after waiting so long, right? The news came from Russ Bullock, head of developer Piranha Games, on Twitter who explains that the delay is needed to "deliver the best single-player MechWarrior experience to date."
We're all for that, having put years into Piranha's flagship game MechWarrior Online, the time matters. This fall's triple-A video game release schedule is overstuffed with with MechWarrior 5 focusing on a campaign that can be played solo or cooperatively with friends, that type of experience needs to be right from the get-go.
We placed MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries on our list of most anticipated 2018 games, but like several others, it won't be released until 2019 now. The game was noticeably absent at E3 2018 as well which should have been a sign but we always expected the release, or next major reveal this winter at this year's MechCon event.
Below is the official announcement and explanation by Russ Bullock:
Piranha Games is hosting MechCon 2018 this December 1st and 2nd at the Vancouver Convention Centre, a venue three times larger than last year's. Expect more details, gameplay, and information on a release date then. We hope to attend ourselves, even just to get hands-on with the title.
In the meantime, we recommended interested Mech pilots check out MechWarrior Online which is free-to-play, and for a single-player tactical experience, BattleTech released recently as well for PC.
The first standalone single-player MechWarrior title in development for PC in nearly 15 years, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will feature intense PvE ‘Mech combat in an immersive, career-based Mercenary campaign driven by player choice. The title will also feature extensive modding via Steam Workshop and a co-op mode.
Featuring an advancing timeline starting in the year 3015, players will adopt the role of a green MechWarrior mercenary thrust into combat as the Third Succession War continues to fracture the Inner Sphere; the vast region of colonized space surrounding Earth. Victory, prestige, and profit will not only require skill on the battlefield, but in the maintenance and enhancement of your BattleMechs.
