Warning! Spoilers ahead for Hawkeye

Kingpin could be the next Thanos-like villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Vincent D'Onofrio says. Daredevil fans got what they wanted when Marvel Studios officially brought Wilson Fisk into the franchise through their latest Disney+ series, Hawkeye. To make things better, Kevin Feige and his team simply rehired D'Onofrio to reprise the role in the MCU.

Marvel Studios has been reportedly planning on bringing Marvel TV and Netflix characters to the MCU long before Kingpin's appearance in Hawkeye. But despite this, some were still apprehensive about the idea. It wasn't until the show was clearly dropping hints of Fisk's involvement that fans really got excited about the possibility. By Hawkeye's penultimate episode, the villain finally made a brief but very important appearance, effectively setting up his role in the show's finale. Now that Kingpin is officially a part of the MCU, the public is obviously eager to know what his future would be like in the MCU.

When asked about this by a recent interview with the Toronto Sun, D'Onofrio claimed that he genuinely doesn't know what's next for him in the franchise. However, he did acknowledge ongoing theories that Kingpin could be the next Thanos-type of villain, albeit an Earth-based one. He refrained from discussing specific ideas but emphasized that Fisk is a very interesting character, and it would be fascinating to explore his character moving forward.

I’ve never thought about it in those terms before. I guess that’s up to Marvel and Kevin and the writers. Do I think he’s capable of being the guy that’s behind everything? In my mind, he always was … I don’t think we’ve begun to explore how interesting Fisk is. That’s why I hope we continue. I really want to. There’s all these different facets. The most interesting thing about this guy — and I think you can tell as we talk here — is what makes him tick. That is complicated and cool in my mind.

It is still quite early to predict what MCU's next overarching narrative will be. Phase 4 is still just in its first year, and the Infinity Saga's narrative didn't become clear until the middle of Phase 2 with Avengers: Age of Ultron despite Thanos' appearance in The Avengers. Despite this, many are already convinced that the franchise's next big bad will be Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), who was introduced in Loki. This makes sense given the franchise's burgeoning multiverse. But if Marvel Studios wants to change things up, throwing a curveball with Kingpin becoming the next Avengers villain would be both surprising and, frankly, more intriguing.

At this point, however, Marvel Studios' priority regarding Fisk's story is to reveal his fate after Hawkeye. The show's finale left his status uncertain after he was supposedly shot by Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox). Chances are, however, that he survived the ordeal. But even if Kingpin doesn't end up to be Marvel Cinematic Universe's next Thanos, he still has a bright future in the franchise, especially as fans look forward to his eventual reunion with Charlie Cox's Daredevil.
