Warning: Spoilers for Thor: Love and Thunder

Marvel’s Hercules reveal in Thor: Love and Thunder secretly introduced a weapon as powerful as Mjolnir. Though the MCU is brimming with powerful relics at this point, Mjolnir is still counted as one of its strongest weapons. Both the hammer and Stormbreaker possess a tremendous amount of power and have served the God of Thunder well in combat.

Following the death of Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, Thor is now in the possession of both Asgardian weapons. As a result of Thor: Love and Thunder’s ending, Thor could be wielding either the hammer or the axe when he makes his inevitable MCU return. Regardless of whether it comes in the form of Avengers 5 or Thor 5, it seems Thor will be using at least one of those weapons to defend himself against Hercules. Played by Brett Goldstein, the Lion of Olympus was tasked by Zeus to hunt down the thunder god in Thor: Love and Thunder’s mid-credits scene.

The shot that unveiled the MCU’s Hercules revealed a surprisingly accurate design, complete with his trademark golden mace from Marvel Comics. The mace, which debuted alongside Hercules for his first fight with Thor in Journey Into Mystery Annual #1, has been described by Marvel Comics as a weapon on par with Mjolnir itself. Forged by the Greek god known as Hephaestus, the golden mace is composed out of the Olympian equivalent of Uru metal, adamantine. It doesn’t have any actual powers like Mjolnir does, but being made entirely out of one of the strongest metals in the entire Marvel Universe makes it capable of hurting any character he comes across.

Can Hercules Beat Thor In The MCU With The Golden Mace?

The golden mace could be the key to Hercules holding his own against Thor when they finally come to blows in the MCU. The multiple battles they’ve engaged in over the years demonstrate that Thor and Hercules are evenly matched in terms of physical strength. The problem, though, is that Thor’s lightning powers give him a slight advantage in combat since Hercules doesn’t have any additional abilities. That’s where the golden mace will likely come into play. The comics have proven that while adamantium (the metal that Wolverine’s claws are made of) can bend under the force of Mjolnir’s blows, an adamantine weapon can easily withstand - and counter - Mjolnir’s might. With the mace, Hercules should be able to even the odds when their battle begins.

The mace isn’t as integral to Hercules’ comic story in the same way that Mjolnir is to Thor’s, nor it is always with him, but it’s sure to be on hand when the two gods clash in the MCU’s future. Despite Hercules’ status as one of the strongest characters in Marvel Comics history, he may still need the golden mace to offset the power of Stormbreaker or Mjolnir. Thanks to Thor: Love and Thunder’s setup, the door is now open for a thrilling showdown between Thor and Hercules in the MCU.
