You have to hand it to James Gunn for adding in a superb romance angle in the Guardians of the Galaxy series where the characters in question were so dysfunctional. Now, the couple of Star-Lord and Gamora is considered a perfect example of opposites attracting, although they currently aren’t together due to the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Since we’ll be waiting to know the status of their relationship for quite a while until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is released, it’s only natural for us to see just why these two were such a great pair. No couple is without its faults, though, so you’ll also find reasons in this list that point out when they weren’t so compatible.

Broken Up: All The Times They Argued

Gamora and Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy

This applies to the Guardians of the Galaxy as a whole, since all they do is fight and argue. In the case of Gamora and Star-Lord, though, this should be presented as a problem in their romance.

There comes a point where arguing all the time can’t be attributed to romantic tension anymore, and considering we normally see these two arguing, it would be understandable if Gamora had broken up with Quill because she couldn’t have anymore of their pointless debates.

Best: When Star-Lord Made Her Appreciate Music

Quill talks to Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy

There’s no other word than “stuck-up” to describe Gamora when she met Star-Lord, since she had never had any opportunity to enjoy the finer things in life. One of these was the chance to listen to music, and it was Star-Lord who introduced her to this.

Here, Gamora let her shields down to allow Star-Lord to introduce her to his Earth music and agreed that the melody was fun to listen to. It was the first indication that a man like Peter was what had been missing in Gamora’s life all along because he could introduce her to the enjoyment that came with living.

Best: When They Had Unspoken Feelings

You can’t expect someone like Gamora to fall so easily in love. She had been raised by a warlord like Thanos, who never gave his children any love and raised them to be assassins; this made it reasonable why Gamora kept things unsaid between her and Quill.

It was something that was good too, because it allowed both of them to understand fully that they really were falling in love. Any other woman would have had a nothing fling with Quill, but Gamora keeping him at arm’s length made the unspoken feelings all the more real.

Best: Because Star-Lord Made Her Love

Elaborating on the above point, we’d like to make you realize that Gamora didn’t know what love was until she started loving Peter. Beforehand, she hadn’t understood her love for Nebula either, and had considered it to just be a rivalry; it was after she fell in love with Quill that she understood what feelings are.

Had she never met Star-Lord, Gamora would have become what Thanos wanted, and that was a killing machine with no regard for love or care. It was because of Quill that she saw just how wonderful life would be with some love in it.

Broken Up: Because He Acts Like A Child

Star-Lord learns that Thanos killed Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War

Then again, how many times has Gamora seemed more like a mom than a romantic partner to Star-Lord? The guy acts like he’s a teenager, even though he was 38-years-old in Avengers: Infinity War.

Pairing Star-Lord with the likes of Drax and Rocket makes the entire arrangement seem as if Gamora is the only adult among children, which would give her reason to leave if she hadn’t had anywhere else to go. We’re not saying she didn’t want to be there, but she wouldn’t be wrong if Star-Lord’s childish antics got to her.

Best: When Star-Lord Agreed To Take Her Life

It’s the ultimate act of love when you promise to do something you really don’t want to do for your significant other, and Star-Lord made the biggest one possible when he agreed he would kill her to prevent Thanos from knowing the location of the Soul Stone.

For a guy like Star-Lord, who had seen his mother, father, and adoptive father die before his eyes, this was a kind of promise that you wouldn’t have expected him to make, but it was a testament to their bond that he agreed to do so if the time came for it.

Best: When He Remembered His Mother Because Of Her

The Guardians might not have been able to save Xandar had it not been for Quill sharing the burden of the Power Stone with all of them. This came about when Star-Lord had the stone in his grasp and was close to combusting because of it.

It was the sight of Gamora asking him to take her hand that brought flashes of his mother to him, and in order to atone for not being there for his mom when she died, Star-Lord grasped Gamora’s hand and in turn saved the galaxy.

Best: During Their Dance

Peter Quill

It’s the little things that show to us if a couple is compatible or not, and Star-Lord and Gamora displayed this very well in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when they had their little dance. Although Gamora was apprehensive of Ego, it was a cute display of how Star-Lord would turn to her when feeling happy.

Most likely, the two had many more times like this during the gap between this film and Avengers: Infinity War, so you can imagine cute times where Star-Lord and Gamora were dancing to his Earth-based music.

Broken Up: When Gamora Attacked Him

Star-Lord Gamora Cropped (2)

All right, there wasn’t an actual relationship to break up here, seeing as the Gamora in question was the one before Guardians of the Galaxy, but you can consider this their break-up seeing as Gamora was so disgusted by Star-Lord.

Here, Gamora attacked him for assuming she was attracted to him, and proceeded to kick him in the worst place. After this, Gamora mysteriously disappeared, even leaving behind her sister, and making it clear that Star-Lord and Gamora’s relationship was effectively over because that version of her is definitely dead.

Best: When Star-Lord Tried To Take Her Life

Star-Lord struggles to kill Gamora

It’s one thing to just promise that you’ll take your lover’s life, and a whole another thing to actually go through with it. In Avengers: Infinity War, the final time Star-Lord and the original Gamora ever saw one another was here where he made good on his earlier promise.

Even though he despised himself for doing it, Star-Lord assured Gamora he loved her and pulled the trigger to kill her so that Thanos wouldn’t apprehend her. Although it turned out to be a ruse from Thanos, the act proved once and for all that there was unconditional love and trust between Star-Lord and Gamora. We’re just hoping Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finally reunites them.
