Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Captain America: Civil War, suggested Tom Holland have a better knowledge of movies than his character Peter Parker/Spider-Man. The Russos had a lot on their plates when it came to Civil War, as they needed to juggle a brewing war between the Avengers alongside some new character introductions. One of those introductions was, of course, for Holland's Spider-Man. Fans had spent years hoping Spider-Man would one day join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that time finally came in Civil War. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) recruits him for the showdown against Captain America (Chris Evans) and his allies, thus kicking off Spider-Man's time in the MCU.

During said showdown at an airport in Germany, Spider-Man comes up with a clever strategy that gives Team Iron Man the upper hand against a giant Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). He takes a page out of The Empire Strikes Back's book and wraps Ant-Man's legs up with his webs, effectively trapping him in place so Tony and Rhodey (Don Cheadle) can knock him down. However, the real funny moment of that scene comes when Peter references Empire Strikes Back by calling it "that really old movie." This joke even comes back in Avengers: Infinity Warwhen Peter references Aliens in a similar way.

It turns out that before Civil War, Holland had never seen Empire Strikes Back. The Russos revealed this while talking to FOX 5 DCwhere they also shared they suggested Holland watch some older movies on his own. "We were stunned," Joe Russo said. "He [Holland] is a very young man. [Empire Strikes Back] is twice his age. We've since gotten him to invest some of his time watching some older films, hence the Pizza Film School. Holland needed to go to Pizza Film School." Pizza Film School is the Russos' YouTube series where they watch a classic film every week and discuss it.

Anthony Russo continued by adding, "I have to tell you, I actually got really excited when he said he hadn't seen it because the idea was so novel to me and unexpected. I was like, 'This is fantastic.' Tom is a guy whose sensibilities we really admire and value, and it's like, 'Oh my God, we get to tap into his sensibilities and they're unaffected by Star Wars.'" It does feel like a rather unique situation to be presented with someone who has never seen Star Wars. It's especially funny that Holland had never seen the original films, since his solo movie Spider-Man: Homecoming establishes Peter as a really big Star Wars fan. It sounds like the Russos might've helped Holland along in his film education, though.

Holland will once again play Peter Parker for the MCU's Spider-Man 3, which is currently slated for release in November 2021. So far, Marvel hasn't let many details about that movie slip, but fans are expecting it to pick up where last year's Spider-Man: Far From Home left off. Beyond that, it isn't clear where Spider-Man will show up in the MCU, but he's definitely expected to appear in at least one other film. He's come a long way since Civil War, which maybe means he's seen some more movies too.
