Spider-Man: Far From Home was the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that served as an epilogue for the Infinity Saga, months after Avengers: Endgame shattered box-office records. Acknowledging the events of the latter movie, Far From Home sees Peter Parker (Tom Holland) reeling Endgame’s impact and going on a European field trip, while a new threat disrupts it.
Despite Endgame’s release, fans and audiences dug up Spidey’s latest adventure, resulting in positive feedback and a billion-dollar gross. There is much to love about Peter on Far From Home, but there are also aspects to hate about him here.
Hated: Having An Awkward Moment with the Seamstress
Though Peter declined Nick Fury’s offer to join forces with Mysterio to stop the Elementals, it did not stop Fury from hijacking his school trip to let Peter helm his duties as Spider-Man. This is also so Fury can shield Peter’s alter ego as Spider-Man.
That resulted in an awkward encounter with one of Fury’s operatives. When the class stops at Austria, Peter is led to the seamstress for his stealth suit. However, Brad Davis caught him in the act. While not his fault, Peter should have outwitted his way out of this cringe situation.
Loved: Being Charismatic As Always
It is reliving to see Tom Holland still possess that youthful Peter Parker charm that started from Captain America: Civil War and carried on throughout Phase 3. The Spider-Man movies showed his teenage anxieties and adolescent awkwardness that did not deter him from being an optimistic member of the Avengers.
Peter’s charisma made it possible for him (and the audience) to cope with the events of Endgame and carve a new path. And the teen delivered, from Aunt May’s charity event (despite a hasty walkout) to his interactions with MJ.
Hated: Dodging His Spider-Man Duties
Peter hoped to skip his Spider-Man duties and summons from Nick Fury to prioritize his school trip as a break from superhero work. While no one can blame him from wanting a catharsis for a normal life (since he is still a teenager), it rubbed the wrong way for others to see Peter ditch his Spidey suit for his trip.
This is considering that Peter went through his own “with-great-power-comes-with-great-responsibility” arc in Homecoming. So, he could have packed a spare suit in case of emergency. But Aunt May did instead.
Loved: Swinging Around New York With MJ
Gladly, Peter won over MJ at the end of Far From Home. Throughout, it seems the two have the compatibility and rapport to carry over their relationship: MJ is level-headed and observant, while Peter is clever and determined. And having discovered Peter’s secret life as Spider-Man, she easily adapted to his persona and assisted him.
Their relationship paid off with Peter as Spider-Man taking MJ on a web swing across New York. For any superhero that has an equally awesome love interest, this is a relationship goal to look forward.
Hated: Focusing More on Pursuing MJ
And while the Peter-and-MJ moments are one of the best in the film, it was puzzling to retrace how Peter was attracted and determined to pursue MJ since Homecoming never addressed his sudden crush to her. So, to take it on face value at the start of Far From Here is too much to accept.
Peter determined on pursuing MJ seems slightly out-of-nowhere self-centered at first, considering Peter just coming from being blipped and reeling with the fate of his mentor Tony Stark. So, easy with the odium towards Peter.
Loved: Stopping the Water Elemental Without His Suit
The first attack of the Water Elemental is the first major action sequence. And it involves Peter fending it off, without the use of his Spider-Man suit, before Mysterio’s arrival. Thus, it would take his agility and his wits to quickly prevent the Water Elemental from laying waste in Venice.
It is really fascinating how Peter was able to leap over Venice’s buildings to get a perfect vantage point of the Elemental without exposing himself. That continues to prove that with or without suit, Peter Parker is a true hero.
Hated: Unleashing An Accidental Drone Strike
As part of Tony Stark’s testament, Peter was bequeathed with his glasses, gaining access to E.D.I.T.H., who controls a large weaponized drone supply. It also flashes personal databases to those around Peter. So, working his way around E.D.I.T.H., he intends to delete Brad’s embarrassing photo of him with the seamstress.
But in the process, he accidentally unleashed a drone strike on Brad. Keep in mind, this placed an entire bus of students in jeopardy. Even though Peter quickly thwarted the drone, it also risked his identity as Spider-Man being exposed.
Loved: Creating A Brand-New Spider-Man Suit
After losing to Quentin Beck/Mysterio in Berlin, Peter finds himself bruised in the Netherlands and calls out to Happy Hogan for assistance. Hogan opened about his feelings on losing his beloved employer but motivated Peter to take the huge leap to owning his vital responsibilities and carving his own destiny.
This prompted Parker to use the ship’s suit generator and build a brand-new Spidey suit for his battle in London. One may say this represents Peter stepping up as a hero and proving he is a worthy successor to Stark.
Hated: Giving Up E.D.I.T.H. to Quentin
That leap to crucial heroism makes up for Peter’s past huge mistake. After their battle against the Fire Elemental in Prague, Peter reflects upon the epiphany about E.D.I.T.H. and thinks that Quentin is the worthy successor to Stark. So, he shoulders the responsibility of E.D.I.T.H. to him just like that.
Out of all of Peter’s past mistakes, from being trapped in an archival vault to nearly wrecking a ferry, this has to be his most illogical yet since it seems Mysterio was his only option (not any Avenger) and Peter could have looked at his database. Wrong move, Night Monkey.
Loved: Overcoming Mysterio’s Illusions
But that made Mysterio a perfect foe for Peter at this stage since his emergence parallels to Peter’s personal struggle on fulfilling his illusionary goal to follow Stark’s footsteps. No wonder that one of the fascinating action sequences of the movie involves escaping Mysterio’s Doctor Strange-like layers of realistic illusions.
However, that did not stop Peter from overcoming Mysterio’s illusions for the second time and being determined as ever to stop Mysterio from his large-scale trickery over London. Seeing Peter thwart an Avengers-level threat without any help from the Avengers (but with assistance from MJ and company) is truly triumphant.
