When Earth's Mightiest Heroes failed to stop Thanos from completing the Infinity Gauntlet and snapping his fingers in Avengers: Infinity War, Peter Parker was among the half of the universe that was wiped from existence. Fans of Tom Holland's portrayal of the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler were shocked to see the popular young Avenger crumble to ash. However, when Marvel started production on Spider-Man: Far From Home, it became clear that the MCU wasn't done with Spidey just yet.
Marvel is keeping details about the highly-anticipated follow-up to Spider-Man: Homecoming quiet, but images taken from the film's set have revealed a variety of interesting spoilers and sparked countless rumors. Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Cobie Smulder's Maria Hill are confirmed to be in the film, but little is known about the villains who Spider-Man will be facing when he returns home.
Since Homecoming saw Vulture team up with two different versions of Shocker, and set up the creation of the Scorpion by introducing criminal Mac Gargan, Far From Home will likely continue the trend of adding several villains from Spider-Man's Rogues Gallery to the MCU. Some of Spider-Man's most famous foes would make fantastic additions to Far From Home, but a few iconic comic villains aren't ready or simply don't deserve to appear on the big screen any time soon.
Here are 10 Spider-Man Villains Who Should Be In Far From Home (And 10 That Shouldn’t Join The MCU).
SHOULD: SCORPION
Vulture and Shocker were the central villains of Spider-Man: Homecoming, but comic book fans know that the film also introduced another classic Spider-Man adversary: the Scorpion. In the comics, Mac Gargan was a private investigator who allowed himself to be turned into the Scorpion during an attempt to take the wall-crawler out for J. Jonah Jameson. When his efforts failed, he became a full-fledged criminal and frequent Spider-Man enemy.
The Homecoming version of Gargan was arrested after attempting to make a weapons deal with Adrian Toomes. He blamed Spider-Man for his imprisonment, and asked Toomes to reveal Spider-Man's identity so he could get revenge on the hero. The criminal already has a scorpion tattoo on his neck, so it seems inevitable that Gargan will eventually don the Scorpion suit and tail to take out Spider-Man at some point in the MCU's future.
SHOULDN'T: MOLTEN MAN
A set of LEGO figures being produced for Far From Home will supposedly feature minor Spider-Man villain Molten Man, prompting rumors that the antagonist will appear in the film.
When chemical engineer Mark Raxton accidentally spilled an experimental liquid metallic alloy all over himself, he was granted superhuman strength and the ability to project radiation and generate heat. Raxton took on the supervillain mantle of Molten Man, and frequently found himself at odds with Spider-Man as he tried to commit crimes throughout New York City. Molten Man is powerful, but he's not a particularly popular member of Spider-Man's Rogues Gallery. He doesn't even join the Sinister Six in the comics, so there's really no reason for the MCU to include him.
SHOULD: VULTURE
Even villains know that there is strength in numbers, which is why Spider-Man's greatest adversaries frequently work together as the Sinister Six. Marvel's comics have seen several different iterations of this team, and a number of them have included the Vulture.
Adrian Toomes survived his epic battle against Spider-Man at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, and since fan response to Michael Keaton's portrayal of the villain was positive, it's no big surprise that Keaton is rumored to reprise his role in Far From Home. Toomes' refusal to give up Spider-Man's secret identity to Mac Gargan in prison implies he may have turned a new leaf. However, if other villains tempt him with enough money, or threaten to harm his family, Vulture might be persuaded to join the Sinister Six and face off against Spidey once again.
SHOULDN'T: SHOCKER
Homecoming did a great job utilizing Keaton's Vulture, but the film's take on the classic Spider-Man foe Shocker left a lot to be desired. Adrian Toomes accidentally took out the first criminal to don vibrational gauntlets and adopt the Shocker mantle before viewers got the chance to learn anything about him. He was later replaced with another one of Toomes' random minions.
Shocker is a frequent member of the Sinister Six in the comics and one of the most well-known members of Spider-Man's Rogues Gallery. Unfortunately, the MCU version lacked any sort of characterization and wouldn't be particularly interesting to see in action again. Peter's best friend Ned Leeds managed to defeat the villain, so Shocker simply isn't powerful enough to be deemed a legitimate threat.
SHOULD: HYDRO-MAN
Hydro-Man may not be as well-known as villains like Venom or the Green Goblin, but he's still among Spider-Man's most powerful foes. His ability to manipulate water allows him to control oceans, create tsunamis, turn himself into a completely liquid form, and increase his mass to the point that he can acquire superhuman strength. Hydro-Man's powers, when combined with Marvel's massive special effects budget, would undoubtedly make for some epic action sequences if the villain was to clash with Spider-Man on the big screen.
When Tom Holland posted a video on social media of his Far From Home stunt double being hit by a giant wave, rumors immediately began to spread that Hydro-Man might appear in the film. Holland has a history of accidentally spoiling major Marvel plotlines, so it's certainly possible that the set video he posted gave away more than he meant to.
SHOULDN'T: DOCTOR OCTOPUS
All signs point towards the Marvel Cinematic Universe giving fans a big-screen version of the Sinister Six at some point soon, so it'd make sense to introduce Doctor Octopus, the criminal mastermind who often leads the villainous team. Sony's 2004 hit Spider-Man 2 proved that Doc Ock has what it takes to carry a live-action film, but that doesn't mean he should appear in Far From Home.
Doctor Octopus is one of Spider-Man's most notorious and formidable adversaries, so there's no way Marvel can do his character proper justice if he's crowded into a film with a number of other villains. The tentacled mad scientist should have a central role, so viewers can get a full understanding of how intelligent and dangerous he truly is. Otto would make a great addition to the MCU, but viewers shouldn't expect to see him just yet.
SHOULD: CHAMELEON
With Nick Fury and Maria Hill confirmed to appear in Far From Home, this seems like the perfect time to introduce the Spider-Man villain who frequently gives S.H.I.E.L.D. a hard time in the comics. Chameleon is the ultimate super-spy because he is a master of disguise, and an expert actor and impressionist. His ability to perfectly impersonate nearly anyone has made him a valuable member of HYDRA, the KGB, and the Sinister Six, despite his original lack of superhuman powers.
Spider-Man's spider-sense helps him detect danger, so it's possible that Agents Fury and Hill will hire him in Far From Home because he can see through the Chameleon's many disguises, and put the criminal behind bars. Let's just hope Marvel doesn't change the villain's origin story by turning him into a shape-shifting Skrull that is left over from Captain Marvel.
SHOULDN'T: VENOM
In the comics, Eddie Brock and the Venom symbiote bond over their mutual dislike for Peter Parker and join forces to become one of Spider-Man's greatest enemies. Fans of the iconic Marvel villain were outraged when Sony first announced plans for a Venom solo film, which would establish an origin story that didn't even include Spider-Man. However, the film's 87% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes implies that viewers still found a way to enjoy Tom Hardy's take on the classic character.
It would be great to see characters from Sony's Spider-Man Cinematic Universe actually interact with Tom Holland's Peter Parker, but since Venom portrayed its titular character as an anti-hero, it wouldn't make sense to include Hardy's character in Far From Home as a villain. Comic fans shouldn't expect to see an MCU face-off between Spider-Man and his symbiotic rival in the near future.
SHOULD: MYSTERIO
Mysterio, the master of illusions, is one of the most popular and powerful members of Spider-Man's Rogues Gallery. Fans have been begging for Mysterio to appear in a live-action movie ever since Sony released their first Spider-Man film back in 2002. Quentin Beck's mastery of special effects and illusions would give the CGI team endless possibilities for the big screen.
Audiences might finally get to see Mysterio take center stage in Far From Home, because leaked set videos seem to confirm rumors from earlier this year that Jake Gyllenhaal will bring the villain to life in the movie. These behind-the-scenes images don't include Mysterio's classic fishbowl helmet, but even the biggest fans recognize that Beck's typical costume isn't the most practical or realistic. No matter what costume alterations Marvel makes, it'll be amazing to see Mysterio in action.
SHOULDN'T: THE SPOT
Since heroes are only as good as their villains, viewers want to see Spider-Man square off against his greatest foes on the big screen. Some enemies, however, are just way too powerful for the beloved web-slinger to realistically defeat. In the comics, scientist Jonathan Ohnn's attempts to replicate the teleportation abilities of the superhero Cloak, which gave him the ability to create dimensional portals with a mere thought.
In an instant, The Spot can throw Spider-Man into a portal, which could teleport him to the center of the ocean or into the heart of a volcano. Ohnn easily defeated Spider-Man during their first comic book confrontation, and writers had to dramatically reduce his intelligence over time just so the wall-crawler could have a chance against The Spot. If he was paired up with rumored Far From Home villains, such as the Vulture and Mysterio, the final battle would be too much for Peter Parker to handle.
SHOULD: KRAVEN THE HUNTER
If Marvel manages to squeeze Chameleon into Far From Home, the studio might as well introduce his half-brother, Sergei Kravinoff. Kraven the Hunter makes it his life's mission to capture Spider-Man and prove that he's the greatest hunter in the entire world. He uses various jungle herbs to enhance his senses to a nearly-superhuman level, and he often prefers to use his bare hands to take down his prey.
Kraven doesn't really have the ambition to take over the world or commit serious crimes outside of taking out Spider-Man, so he could easily be included with a few other antagonists in a Spider-Man solo outing. If Spider-Man takes out Chameleon in Far From Home, Kraven can vow at the end of the film to avenge his half-brother by eliminating the hero, setting the infamous hunter up for a larger role in a later movie.
SHOULD: KINGPIN
Netflix has canceled both Luke Cage and Iron Fist because of a rapid decline in viewership between their first and second seasons, but Marvel's Daredevil is still going strong and recently released its third season. That show's success is due in no small part to Vincent D'Onofrio's flawless portrayal of Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime.
Fisk is currently focused on ruling over the criminal underworld in Hell's Kitchen, but in the comics, he tries to control all of New York City. His villainous undertakings constantly put him at odds with Spider-Man, so perhaps it's time for D'Onofrio to make the leap to the big screen and finally fight the young Avenger. Fans have been begging for a crossover between the MCU and Marvel's Netflix characters for years, and the Kingpin would be the perfect character to link the two universes together.
SHOULDN'T: JACKAL
The Jackal may not be the most well-known member of Spider-Man's extensive catalog of villains, but his impact on the hero's life in the comics has been incredibly dramatic. Professor Miles Warren was obsessed with his student Gwen Stacy and jealous of her boyfriend, Peter Parker. When the Green Goblin took Gwen's life, Warren blamed Spider-Man for her passing and proceeded to create clones of both Gwen and Peter.
He soon became a mad geneticist and cloning expert, and his skills were used to create the Scarlet Spider and bring several fallen villains and characters from Spider-Man's past back to life. The Clone Saga launched by The Jackal's experiments is one of the most important Spider-Man comic events, but it's also one of the least popular Marvel storylines. It likely won't ever be adapted on the big screen, and definitely shouldn't play out in Far From Home.
SHOULD: BLACK CAT
Few Spider-Man characters have experienced as much development and change over the years as Felicia Hardy, aka the Black Cat. She started out as a criminal, but when she fell for Spider-Man, she became an anti-hero and Spidey's occasional lover. Then, when Doctor Octopus took over Peter Parker's body and became the Superior Spider-Man, he attacked Felicia while she was committing a minor robbery. The betrayal from someone who appeared to be her former ally drove her to become a full-fledged supervillain.
Sony plans on bringing the Black Cat to their Spider-Man Cinematic Universe in an upcoming spin-off film, but before co-starring as an anti-hero, Felicia should be introduced as a minor villain in Far From Home. An encounter with Spider-Man could inspire her to reform her criminal ways and join Silver Sable in Silver & Black.
SHOULDN'T: JACK O'LANTERN
Marvel has done an amazing job bringing ridiculous-looking comic book characters like Rocket Raccoon and Thanos to life on the big screen in a realistic way, but there's no way the studio could pull off a live-action Jack O'Lantern. In the comics, Jack O'Lantern is basically a cheap imitation of the Hobgoblin, one of Spider-Man's most notorious adversaries.
He throws exploding pumpkins and flies around on a glider like the villain he was inspired by, but he looks absolutely ridiculous. Instead of wearing a creepy goblin mask, he dons a flaming helmet that is in the shape of a jack o'lantern. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe wants a masked antagonist to fly around throwing pumpkins at Peter Parker, Hobgoblin and Green Goblin would be far better options than this B-list supervillain.
SHOULDN'T: MORBIUS, THE LIVING VAMPIRE
Even though Jared Leto's portrayal of the Joker in Suicide Squad was almost universally disliked by viewers and critics, Sony has granted the actor his second comic book role. Leto will reportedly star in Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spin-off film Morbius as iconic Spidey villain Morbius the Living Vampire.
After being introduced as one of Spider-Man's most horrific adversaries, Morbius was given his own series in Marvel comics and became an anti-hero of sorts. Like most vampires, he has superhuman strength and speed, the ability to fly, the ability to hypnotize his victims, and is reliant on consuming human blood. A dark Morbius film might be interesting enough to watch, but it would be a bit ridiculous to see Tom Holland's Peter Parker square off against an actual vampire. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has enough going on without adding supernatural creatures to the mix.
SHOULD: TINKERER
When Adrian Toomes and his workers salvaged Chitauri, Dark Elf, and Ultron's technology, Phineas Mason figured out how to weaponize their findings and turn his friends into supervillains. The Tinkerer gave the Vulture and the two Shockers the tools they needed to commit crimes throughout Spider-Man: Homecoming. By the end of the film, Adrian Toomes was placed behind bars, but Mason was still at large.
The Avengers have Tony Stark and Shuri to help equip them with all sorts of advanced technology, so Spider-Man's greatest foes need a tech genius of their own to help them keep up with Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The Tinkerer should stay in the MCU, appearing whenever villains need new suits and gadgets to commit crimes.
SHOULDN'T: TASKMASTER
Taskmaster has held his own against nearly every hero in Marvel comics. He considers Spider-Man to be one of his greatest rivals, but the mercenary assassin deserves more than a mere appearance in a Spider-Man solo outing and would be better saved for a future Avengers film. Tony Masters' genius-level intellect allows him to replicate the physical movement of peak-level humans and instantly figure out how best to counter an opponent's strategy.
By observing the heroes who are still alive in the MCU after Avengers 4, Taskmaster could learn their combat styles and become an exceptionally formidable antagonist. It would be great to see Taskmaster fight Spider-Man in Far From Home, especially after seeing the two characters face off in this year's Spider-Man PS4 game. However, Taskmaster shouldn't appear in the MCU until he can get a chance to battle all of the Avengers.
SHOULD: NORMAN OSBORN
In Avengers 4, the epic war against Thanos will presumably come to an end and a new villain will need to step up to challenge Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Norman Osborn may be the man for the job.
Casual comic fans may know Norman Osborn as the alter-ego of Spider-Man's arch-enemy the Green Goblin, but Osborn is far more than just that. He's a criminal and corporate mastermind who, at one point, weaseled his way into becoming the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the leader of his own team of Dark Avengers. He has enough money, power, and influence to take over the world and is just crazy enough to do it. So while Osborn could start out as a mere Spider-Man foe in Far From Home, he should eventually become an enemy to all of the Avengers.
SHOULDN'T: GREEN GOBLIN
Norman Osborn would be a perfect fit for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he shouldn't become the Green Goblin anytime soon. Audiences already got their fair share of goblins from the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield-led Spider-Man films, so the MCU would be better off making Norman a bigger threat.
In the comics, Norman has taken on the mantle of the Iron Patriot and absorbed the powers of the Avengers during his time as the Super-Adaptoid. He doesn't need to be the Goblin to battle his enemies. In fact, he doesn't even need to dirty his hands at all to take Spider-Man or other heroes down if he doesn't want to. As the head of multibillion-dollar corporation Oscorp, he can hire as many supervillains or mercenaries as he wants, and could be the one to assemble the Sinister Six.
