Warning: spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok ahead.
“Before creation itself, there were six singularities. Then, the universe exploded into existence and the remnants of this system were forged into concentrated ingots: Infinity Stones.” – The Collector
Each stone represents a different aspect of the Universe and can be harnessed together using the Infinity Gauntlet. They are the greatest power in the universe and have unparalleled destructive capabilities. Hence why Thanos is after them.
So far, the MCU has revealed five of the six stones, leaving the Soul Stone unaccounted for. This stone is a sentient being that hungers for souls to collect. It gives its possessors the ability to steal, manipulate, and alter souls, and allows them to visit the Soul World. All we know about the stone’s existence in the MCU is that it’s an amber colored gem.
Fans have circulated a theory that each letter of THANOS corresponds to the location of each stone. The T stands for the Tesseract (Space Stone), the H will reveal the location of the Soul Stone, the A stands for Aether (Reality Stone), N for Necklace (Time Stone), O for Orb (Power Stone), and S is for Scepter (the original location of the Mind stone).
So, where is the Soul Stone? Here are the 15 Crazy Theories About Where the MCU’s Soul Stone is Hiding.
15 Already With Thanos
The MCU likes to toy with its fans, so maybe the Soul Stone won’t have a grand reveal. Instead, the easiest way to explain the whereabouts of the stone is to simply show that Thanos is already in possession of it.
According to believers of this theory, Thanos could have retrieved the stone long before The Avengers or during the two years between Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok. He’s an all-powerful being, so why would he have simply sat in his chair this entire time?
Thanos could have had the final stone all along and it could have been the catalyst for his quest to bring the rest of the stones together. Some even believe it could be the ultimate source of all his power or the item that allows him to communicate with Mistress Death.
Based on these speculations, the “H” in the THANOS theory could stand for Hand.
14 The Eternal Flame
The Eternal Flame is a mystical flame that can’t be extinguished. Much like the powers of the Soul Stone, it contains the ability to manipulate souls and resurrect the dead.
Hela uses the flame in Thor: Ragnarok when she brings her undead soldiers and Fenris Wolf back to life. However, prior to raising the dead, Hela goes on a little rant about all the items in Odin’s Vault.
She calls the Infinity Gauntlet a fake, points to the Tesseract saying, “that’s not bad”, and identifies the Eternal Flame as “true power”.
There is nothing more powerful than an Infinity Stone, and since we know that the Tesseract houses the Space Stone, fans have assumed that the flame could only wield “true power” if it was another Infinity Stone.
The Eternal Flame would also fit the THANOS theory, as the “H” would stand for Hela.
13 Heimdall's Eyes
Heimdall is the all-seeing Asgardian that once guarded the Bifrost Bridge. His eyes can see into all nine realms and the ten trillion souls that inhabit them. Many fans believe that this soul-seeking ability is actually powered by the Soul Stone.
Heimdall’s eyes are an amber orange, much like the color of the last infinity stone, and there are a lot of close-up shots of them throughout the movies despite the character’s limited screen time. Also, Heimdall starts with the letter “H," fulfilling the requirements of the THANOS theory.
In Age of Ultron, Scarlett Witch forces Thor to see a vision of a blind Heimdall. Many fans believe this vision was foreshadowing Thanos ripping out Heimdall’s eyes so that he can possess the final Infinity Stone.
There’s also another theory that the orange gem in Heimdall’s chest plate is the Soul Stone. However, he ditched his armor in Thor: Ragnarok.
12 The Grandmaster's Staff
In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is taken on a Willy Wonka Ride of Nightmares to meet the Grandmaster. When he arrives, the Grandmaster uses an orange staff to melt his cousin into a pile of burnt-toast smelling goo.
Based on this scene, fans believe the staff can manipulate souls and could potentially collect them, just like the Soul Stone. It is also the same orangish color that we expect the last Infinity Stone to be. The staff's stone could even be the item that is giving the Grandmaster his immortality.
In the Thanos Quests comics, Thanos plays a game against the Grandmaster to retrieve the last infinity gem. Although the last gem in the comics is the Mind Gem, fans think the MCU could use this storyline to reveal their last stone.
The Grandmaster is also related to the Collector, who at one point, had two Infinity Stones.
11 Behind Odin's Eye Patch
One theory suggests that the last stone could be right under our nose – and right above Odin’s.
According to the theory, the Soul Stone is stored behind Odin's eye patch and is what allows him to enchant Mjolnir in Thor to see into people’s souls and determine who is worthy of wielding it.
The theory also goes on to suggest that Odin shared the powers of the Soul Stone with Heimdall, allowing him to see the souls of the nine realms and protect Asgard.
However, this theory has many holes. For one, Odin is dead and probably long lost in the hills of Norway. Secondly, we saw during the mid-credit scenes of Thor 2 that Asgardians didn’t believe two Infinity Stones should be kept in close proximity.
Therefore, why would Odin risk keeping the Tesseract on Asgard if he already had the Soul Stone?
10 1o. With Janet van Dyne
Janet van Dyne operated as Wasp alongside her husband, Hank Pym, until she sacrificed her life and became lost in the Quantum Realm. However, after Scott Lang returned from the realm in Ant-Man, Hank and viewers believed there was hope for Janet’s survival.
According to this theory, one way that Janet could have survived all these years could be because she is in possession of the Soul Stone.
Janet could have found the stone during one of her missions and had it in her possession when she sacrificed herself. She also could have found it in the Quantum Realm, as the Soul Stone is known to possess the ability to travel to another world or realm.
If Janet has the Soul Stone, the H in the THANOS theory might stand for Hank Pym. It would also be an interesting twist as Ant-Man and the Wasp releases after Infinity War.
9 In Thor's Mjolnir
One of the longest standing theories about the Soul Stone is that it is located inside Thor’s Mjolnir.
Mjolnir was forged in the heart of a dying star and has the ability to detect worthy souls and find its way to them. This capability has been defined by some fans as an indication of the Soul Stone’s powers.
Much like the Soul Stone, Mjolnir is not capable of being wielded by a normal human mortal. Hammer also starts with an “H” and therefore fulfills the requirements of the THANOS theory.
Although Hela destroyed Mjolnir in Thor: Ragnarok, she could have simply smashed the vessel and allowed the Soul Stone to be released into the world.
According to this theory, we could see a race between Thor and Thanos to retrieve Mjolnir’s remains and ultimately, the Soul Stone.
8 With Howard the Duck
Nothing happens in the MCU without a reason. Therefore, many fans have started speculating ideas about why Howard the Duck was introduced in the Guardians of the Galaxy post-credit scene.
Although most people believe he was added just as a tribute to his fans, some people have delved further into the mind of James Gunn.
Based on the post-credit scene, Howard the Duck is close enough to the Collector to be sharing a drink with him. As the Collector has collected many things and was once in possession of two Infinity Stones, it might be possible that he trusted Howard the Duck to keep the Soul Stone safe.
This theory might seem extremely far-fetched, but it would also be ingenious. Who would go looking for the last Infinity Stone at the home of a drunk, talking duck?
7 It Appears When The Stones are All Together
Much like Captain Planet’s rings, one theory suggests that the Soul Stone will only appear when all the other stones are collected and put into the Infinity Gauntlet. This theory is founded on the idea that the Soul Stone will be placed in the center of the Gauntlet.
Based on images of the MCU’s Infinity Gauntlet, the centerpiece is an amber colored gem that matches the hue of the Soul Stone.
Since the rest of the stones seem to be placed around the knuckles of the Infinity Gauntlet, the Soul Stone’s unique position could indicate an entirely unique reveal.
Some fans believe that once the rest of the stones are collected, either the Soul Stone will automatically appear in its rightful place, or the Gauntlet will transport the collector to the stone’s location.
6 In Meredith Quill's Engagement Ring
The Celestial being, Ego was once in love with Peter Quill’s mom, Meredith Quill. Could he have proven his love to her by trusting her with the most powerful object in the universe?
This theory suggests that Ego used the Soul Stone to create Meredith’s engagement ring. An Infinity Stone-powered ring could explain the reason why Ego is so connected to Star Lord’s mom and why Meredith died.
Ego claims in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 that he was responsible for Meredith’s death. This could have been a by-product of the ring he gave her. Normal human beings are not capable of wielding an Infinity Stone, and its powers could have caused Meredith’s brain cancer.
If the ring is still in Star Lord’s childhood home, it could be the reason why the Guardians of the Galaxy meet the Avengers in Infinity War.
5 Iron Man's Arc Reactor
In Iron Man, Nick Fury says, “Tony opened the door to an entirely new and different universe becoming Iron Man.” Could this universe have been the byproduct of an Infinity Stone?
According to this theory, Stark used the Soul Stone to create his arc reactor.
This explains why Loki couldn’t control Tony’s mind in The Avengers. Loki’s scepter, which was powered by the Mind Stone, would have been useless in the presence of another Infinity Stone.
There is also a scene in the Infinity War trailer where it seems like Strange, Banner, and Wong are frozen in time and Stark is the only one that can move. This scene might be a result of Thanos taking Strange’s Time Stone and using it against the Avengers.
If Stark’s arc reactor is the Soul Stone, the Time Stone would have no effect on him.
4 In Hell's Kitchen with The Hand
Some theories suggest that the Soul Stone could actually be hiding in one of Marvel’s television series to tie the universes together. The most popular of these theories is that Daredevil’s Hand Organization currently holds the stone.
The Hand is an evil and corrupt organization that dabbled in resurrection capabilities in season two of Daredevil.
In this season, Claire is about to perform an autopsy on a dead Hand ninja when she realizes that the body already had marks indicating that an autopsy was already performed on him. From this, we can assume that the ninja was killed before and ultimately brought back to life.
What if the Hand somehow found a treasure that contained the Soul Stone? Maybe the H in the THANOS Theory stands for the Hand or Hell’s Kitchen.
3 With Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful cosmic superheroes in the MCU. In the comics, she obtains her powers from an accident involving a damaged Kree Psyche-Magnitron. However, without the introduction of a male Captain Marvel, we can expect her origin story to change slightly in the MCU.
Some fans believe the MCU version of Captain Marvel may obtain her powers through the Soul Stone. She could be found trapped in the stone or encounter it to gain her superhuman abilities.
However, Captain Marvel is not expected to make an appearance in Infinity War. Therefore, if she has the Soul Stone, it won’t be revealed until her solo movie in 2019.
This might be an interesting twist though, as Captain Marvel releases between Infinity War and Avengers 4. So, maybe Thanos is unsuccessful in Infinity War, and the Infinity Stones plot spills into the next movie.
2 Adam Warlock's Head
In the Marvel comics, Adam Warlock is the carrier of the Soul Stone. Therefore, if the MCU stays true to the comics, we can expect to see it being sported on his forehead.
Warlock was created by an organization called the Enclave who named their creation, “Him”. This could represent the missing H in the THANOS theory.
Adam was reborn from a cocoon and given the Soul Stone by the High Evolutionary. This cocoon can be seen in the Collector’s possession during the mid-credit scene of Thor: The Dark World and in both Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
In each instance, the cocoon is decorated with a bright gem that is the same color as the missing Soul Stone.
However, James Gunn has confirmed that Adam Warlock will not be involved in Infinity War. Therefore, if he does have the Soul Stone, we won’t see it for a while.
1 Heart of Wakanda
As the last movie before Infinity War, many fans believe Black Panther’s Heart of Wakanda will fit the H in the Thanos theory.
Wakanda houses the Necropolis, or the City of the Dead. Here, Black Panther is the God of the Dead and can commune with every soul that has ever been a Black Panther.
In the Black Panther trailer, we see a glimpse of a surreal, bluish-purple land and T’Challa approaching panthers in a tree. This scene could represent Necropolis and ultimately the Soul World.
If the Soul Stone is in Wakanda, it could be the reason why Thanos sends the Black Order there in the Infinity War trailer.
It could also explain the Wakandan’s spiritual beliefs. In Civil War, Black Panther tells Black Widow, “In my culture, death is not the end. It’s more of a stepping off point... [that] leads you into the greater elsewhere, forever.”
