The first footage for Marvel's upcoming Secret Invasion reveals a look at an old Nick Fury. The Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe series from creator Kyle Bradstreet adapts the comics storyline of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu. Secret Invasion will consist of six episodes and is expected to premiere sometime in 2022.

The MCU show will center on the Skrulls, a shapeshifting alien race that have infiltrated human civilization. They made their first appearance in 2019's Captain Marvelin which it was revealed that they are the victims of a genocidal war by the Kree, who destroyed their initial home world and sent them out into the galaxy as refugees. Continuing the collaboration between the Skrulls and former-S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury seen in the end-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Samuel L. Jackson will star alongside Ben Mendelsohn's Skrull leader Talos.

Now, as part of the Disney+ Day event, new footage of Secret Invasion gives fans their first look at an older Fury. Sporting a thicker beard and ditching his trademark leather jacket, Jackson's latest portrayal of the Marvel character is most notably missing his eyepatch, showing his damaged eye to the world. While this image gives no indication of where he's located, Fury will supposedly be assisting the Skrulls in deep space.

Secret Invasion New Logo Disney+ Day

Little is known about the plot of Secret Invasion, and given that the Skrulls have been traditionally portrayed as villainous in the comics, the source material won't provide much of a hint. However, Kingsley Ben-Adir (One Night in Miami) has been cast as the lead villain, with Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke and Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman playing as-yet undisclosed roles. Filming for Secret Invasion began in September, with Jackson joining the production in October, and no indication has been given that the series has wrapped.

While Marvel fans are dying to learn more about Secret Invasion, the fact that filming is still underway would explain why it received less of a Disney+ Day clips package than many other upcoming Marvel shows. However, this peek at a significantly different look for Fury is a sign the series will explore the mysterious character in a way no MCU project has so far. But, of course, it shouldn't be taken for granted that this image is even of the real Fury, considering fans spent all of Far From Home watching a Skrull impersonator. Audiences will have to wait for more footage to know for sure what Secret Invasion has in store, but given the name, it won't be a surprise if Marvel Studios keeps this one close to the chest.
