Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu addresses his MCU future in the recently-announced Phases 5 and 6. Released last year, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings acts as an introduction for Liu's character, telling the story of how he confronts his past and embraces a new future as a superhero. The film was a hit with both audiences and critics and it didn't take long for Marvel to green-light Shang-Chi 2, with both Liu and director Destin Daniel Cretton returning.

As part of Marvel's San Diego Comic-Con panel last week, the curtain was finally pulled back, revealing what projects fans can expect in the next few years as part of Phase 5 and Phase 6. In addition to Captain America: New World OrderBlade, and Daredevil: Born Again, it was announced that two of the biggest MCU movies ever are coming out in 2026 in the form of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. While little is known about the two new Avengers projects and many of the other movies and shows in Phases 5 and 6, the projects are all part of what is being dubbed "The Multiverse Saga." Unfortunately for those eager for Shang-Chi 2, the panel didn't provide any update on the anticipated sequel.

As part of his own separate SDCC appearance, shared by Shang-Chi News on Twitter, Liu addresses his future as Shang-Chi in the MCU's Phases 5 and 6. While not revealing anything concrete, the actor teases that, as he was watching Marvel's presentation, he thought, "I'm going to be busy these next few years." Referencing the bulk of new MCU projects announced, Liu says that he feels that there may be "room" for his character in some of the upcoming movies. Check out Liu's full comment below:

“I don’t want to jump the gun or anything, but I feel like there might be room for me in a couple of those, wouldn’t you say? I was watching the presentation basically from Twitter and being like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna be busy. I’m gonna be busy the next few years.’”

Shang-Chi Avengers 5 Kang Dynasty

Although Liu's comment suggests that he doesn't know for sure which MCU Phase 5 and 6 movies and shows Shang-Chi will be appearing in, the actor clearly expects to be popping up in at least a few of them. At the very least, Shang-Chi will likely feature prominently in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, with those films poised to assemble a new version of the iconic superhero team, and with the former also slated to feature Cretton as its director. Outside of the two new Avengers films, a number of projects in Phase 6 have yet to be announced, any of which could feature Liu's Shang-Chi.

It's currently unclear when Shang-Chi will be released, but it seems likely that the project will come out at some point during Phase 6 given the phase's many unannounced projects. Liu's character has been a hit with fans since the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings but Shang-Chi's larger role in the MCU still remains mostly a mystery. Although the actor's comment doesn't reveal too much, fans of Liu's character certainly seem to be in for an exciting few years as the new hero's arc develops.
