Marvel fans rank Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania alongside all Phase 4 movies, and the results are very telling. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opens Phase 5 of the MCU on a divisive note between critics and general audiences, with one of the worst critical receptions of all MCU movies released so far but more forgiving audience reviews. The MCU is no stranger to this kind of feedback, however, as Phase 4 as a whole had its fair share of critical successes and failures. Now, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania gives Phase 4's mixed bag of popular and unpopular releases a post-Infinity Saga installment to compare themselves to, and Marvel fans have been quick to do just that. For instance, Twitter user @conquercomics asked their followers to rank the eight more recent MCU movies, which they diligently did:

Interestingly, most rankings tend to place three specific movies at the top and three others at the bottom. The well-received Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings commonly take the top spots, while Black Widow, Eternals, and Thor: Love and Thunder compete for the last three places unanimously. Other rankings vary, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness climbing to the top spots and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings falling through the ranks, but Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania rarely leaves the middle section.

Why Quantumania's Reception Is So Decisively Mixed

Paul Rudd as Scott Lang and Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania

The already divisive Phase 4 movies such as Eternals and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness tackle the MCU's larger-than-life nature with a more defined artistic vision, which leads negative reviews to favor one of these aspects over the other but not get onboard with the whole package. Others, like the multiversal Spider-Man: No Way Home, have an extremely ambitious premise, which means that viewers are more clearly intent on liking them or disliking them altogether. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania leans towards the latter category with its premise, but its execution doesn't fully excite or fully disappoint, earning it a mixed reception.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania takes risks with its Quantum Realm setting and Jonathan Majors' introduction as Kang the Conqueror. However, neither the individual characters nor the MCU seems to change in any meaningful way by the end of the movie. Quantumania's reliance on visual effects and ubiquitous comedy is also a point of contention, as viewers have come to expect precisely that from every MCU release. In general, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania doesn't offer many reasons to steer it toward the top or the bottom of fan rankings.

Since the MCU's Phase 5 is just beginning, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's mixed reception isn't a bad omen for Marvel Studios and their plans for the Multiverse Saga. While the third Ant-Man installment plays it safe, future MCU releases could retroactively make it more important to the rest of the franchise than initially thought. For now, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania likely won't top many fan rankings in the Multiverse Saga.
