The costumes used by the MCU’s Eternals draw interesting comparisons to those worn by their comic book counterparts. Leaked images of action figures [via Twitter] in the Marvel Legends have revealed close looks at several of the heroes depicted in the film.

In Marvel’s Eternals movie, the MCU will introduce a race of super-powered immortals created by the Celestials. In the comics, the Eternals are cosmic, god-like beings who have secretly shared the Earth with humans for thousands of years. During this time, the Eternals have actively avoided interfering in human affairs and have occasionally engaged in conflicts with the Deviants, a subterranean, monstrous species and the evil, genetic cousins of the Eternals. Both are about to be adapted to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What exactly Marvel has planned for the Deviants is hard to say, but it is known that most of the main characters associated with the Eternals will play a role in the 2021 movie.

In all, ten Eternals have been confirmed to have a presence in the MCU. Each of their costumes has been teased at one point or another through concept art, but these action figure reveals are the best looks fans have received so far of these new MCU characters. Gilgamesh is the build-a-figure for this set, so the images don’t provide a look at anything more than one of his body parts at a time - and Thena, who will be played by Angelina Jolie in the movie, is missing from this collection of toys. The existing Eternals that can be clearly glimpsed by looking at the photos are Ikaris, Makkari, Sersi, Kingo, Phastos, Druig, Sprite, and Ajak. Here’s how their MCU costumes compare to the comic book heroes.

Ikaris

Ikaris Eternals

In the comics, Ikaris’ costume is a composite of red, blue, and yellow, not unlike DC’s Superman. For the MCU, Marvel has done away with the red and is replacing it with even more yellow and blue. The three round symbols on his chest have been dropped as well, and now just one is on the center of his chest. It should also be noted that the figure has an interchangeable head with yellow energy around his eyes, which confirms that the MCU will have one of their strongest abilities: cosmic eyebeams. Like the MCU Ikaris, the comic book hero fired yellow rays from his eyes and made them his signature attack.

Sprite

Sprite Eternals

Marvel has totally redesigned Sprite, the Eternal who has somehow maintained a youthful appearance over the centuries. On top of gender-swapping the character by casting Lia McHugh, Marvel has given the character a brand-new, silver and green costume. Sprite has always worn green, but it was originally a much lighter color. It could be that Marvel darkened it to avoid it contrasting too much with Gemma Chan’s Sersi.

Kingo

Kingo Eternals

In the comics, Kingo was a Samurai in Marvel’s history, and that aspect of his backstory was incorporated into his look. In having him played by Pakistani-American actor Kumail Nanjiani, Marvel is leaving the Japanese elements of Kingo's character and design behind. Based on what’s included in the action figure packaging, it appears that the MCU’s Kingo won’t be carrying a sword, either. It was previously assumed that Marvel could still make him a swordsman of some kind even if he wasn’t a Samurai, but that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore. One thing that hasn’t been changed about Kingo, however, is his color scheme, which is still maroon.

Druig

Barry Keoghan will play the MCU version of Druig, a less-than-heroic member of the Eternals who has a tendency to participate in morally questionable activities. Typically, the potentially villainous Druig wears red armor and a Magneto-like helmet that has a menacing effect on his appearance. The movie’s Druig does wear a red outfit, but he’s missing the helmet.

Sersi

Sersei Eternals

Sersi has two costumes that she’s known for in Marvel Comics. The first is her original outfit from Jack Kirby’s Eternals series. It’s also been seen in several other comic book titles, including recent ones and over the years it’s only seen a few slight redesigns. Her second costume is the red and black one that she wore during the days that she spent as an Avenger in the early 1990s. It was during this time that Marvel explored a romance between her and Black Knight. Though this is the period of Sersi’s life that Eternals is taking inspiration from, Marvel has clearly chosen to go with her green costume. The one in the movie is a full-body suit, which is quite close to what she looked like in the 2000s.

Phastos

Phastos Eternals

Phastos, the Eternal responsible for making their weapons and technology, will be brought to life by Brian Tyree Henry. Unlike all the other confirmed Eternals featured in the film, Phastos didn’t debut in Kirby’s 1970s comic. He was introduced in the 1985 miniseries. In that title, the character wore blue and purple and had a V-shaped neckline on his costume. In the 2000s, Marvel changed up his design in a big way by ditching the purple altogether and adding yellow tattoos to his face.  Instead of going with his modern look, Marvel is taking a page from the 1985 comic book series by making purple the dominant color on his costume and taking away the tattoos.

Ajak

Marvel Comics Ajak

Ajak, who is male in The Eternals comics, will be played by Salma Hayek. The movie’s take on Ajak – who may be the group’s leader – doesn’t look at all like the Aztec-inspired comic book version. The original Ajak wore a colorful suit of armor with scale mail sleeves. He also sported a large, winged helmet, a blue visor that covered his eyes, and a purple cape. This look has been abandoned by the MCU, which gives Ajak a blue and gold color scheme and a headdress in place of the helmet. Of all the Eternals, it’s Ajak who has been handed the most drastic redesign.

Makkari

Thena and Makkari from Eternals comics.

Just like the situation with Ajak and Sprite, Marvel has changed the gender of its Eternal speedster, Makkari, who will be portrayed by Lauren Ridloff. But despite this, Makkari has one of the most comic book accurate costumes in the movie. Both the comic and the MCU versions are clad in red and white. The movie character doesn’t share the comic book hero’s helmet, but its white symbol has been worked into her outfit - it’s just been moved from the helmet to the chest.
