Audiences were introduced to the Nine Realms in Thor, when the God of Thunder explained these and the Bifrost Bridge to Jane Foster. Since then, many of these have appeared on screen, mostly in Thor’s solo films, but there’s one that hasn’t been shown yet. Over the course of 23 films, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has explored many places both on Earth (like Wakanda) and in space (such as Vormir), as well as other cosmic places, like the Nine Realms.

These are a group of worlds that, although located in separate spiral galaxies, are connected by the branches of Yggdrasil, a figurative World Tree. The Nine Realms were at risk in Thor: The Dark World due to the Convergence, an event where the realms align and portals between the worlds are opened, something Malekith wanted to use to destroy the universe and brink darkness. The most explored realms in the MCU are Earth (referred to as Midgard) and Asgard, home to Odin, Thor, Frigga, Loki, Heimdall, Sif, and the Warriors Three.

Since Thor, the rest of the realms have been shown at some point (some more briefly than others), but there’s still one that hasn’t been visited at all, and has just been casually mentioned in the first two Thor films.

The MCU Is Missing One Of The Nine Realms

The Nine Realms are Asgard, Midgard, Jotunheim, Svartalfheim, Vanaheim, Nidavellir, Niflheim, Muspelheim, and Alfheim. Jotunheim is home to the Frost Giants and was ruled by Laufey, Loki’s real father, and was shown in Thor and Thor: The Dark World. Svartalfheim, home to the Dark Elves and referred to by other inhabitants of the Nine Realms as “the Dark World”, made its appearance in Thor’s second solo film. Vanaheim was also shown in Thor: The Dark World, as Thor, Sif, Fandral, Volstagg, and Hogun fought against the Marauders there.

Nidavellir, which served as the homeworld of the Dwarves, didn’t make its appearance in a Thor film, instead jumping all the way to Avengers: Infinity War. It’s the world Thor, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot travel to to forge a new weapon for Thor. Niflheim is the world Hela was banished to, and it’s home to the region known as Hel. Muspelheim was visited in Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok; it’s the home of the Fire Demons and was ruled by fire giant Surtur. Alfheim, on the other hand, has only been mentioned in the first two films, but it has never been explored. What’s known about it is that it’s where the Light Elves live, and just like the rest of the realms, it was left vulnerable after the destruction of the Bifrost.

With Thor getting a fourth film with Thor: Love and Thunder, there’s still hope for Marvel to remember there’s one realm that hasn’t been explored yet. And if the Dark Elves already appeared, why not introducing the Light Elves too – though in better ways than what Thor: The Dark World did.
