All 12 MCU Movies Releasing After Doctor Strange 2 (& When)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues with the highly-anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but the pop culture powerhouse franchise will continue with 11 new movies and several upcoming TV shows. Doctor Strange 2 will delve further into the multiverse-spanning adventures of the MCU’s heroes, as well as feature the welcome return of director Sam Raimi to Marvel’s movies after his celebrated Spider-Man trilogy. Even with the Infinity Saga concluded, the MCU continues to introduce new heroes and new threats in its upcoming properties, showing that the franchise continues to be a major player in the cinematic landscape.

In addition to continuing the stories of its well-established Infinity Saga heroes, the MCU will also release films based on new Marvel properties. The Fantastic Four and X-Men, both beloved Marvel comic series, will soon make their MCU debuts, due to Disney’s acquisition of their parent company, 20^th Century Fox. With Doctor Strange 2 unleashing the multiverse, some of these properties might enter the franchise due to different realities melding.

Since 2021, the MCU has also found success on television, with all future MCU shows being aired on the streaming service Disney+. The shows’ events are as meaningful as the films, with lore, character arcs, and plot points from the MCU’s Disney+ shows tying into the films, as shown in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange 2. Thor: Love and Thunder - July 8, 2022

With Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor will be the only original founding member of The Avengers to receive a solo film after the Infinity Saga. Now a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor will contend with perhaps his greatest threat yet: Gorr the God Butcher, who will be played by Christian Bale. The film will also see Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster return to the MCU, wielding a repaired Mjolnir and receiving the powers of Thor along with it.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - November 11, 2022

Although Chadwick Boseman played T’Challa wonderfully throughout the Infinity Saga, his tragic passing means that the King of Wakanda cannot appear in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Instead, the film is said to focus on the society and culture of the nation, with Letitia Wright’s Shuri perhaps taking on the superhero role of Black Panther while T’Challa leads the country off-screen. The film is also rumored to introduce Namor the Sub-Mariner to the MCU, perhaps as an anti-villain.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania - February 17, 2023

Ant-Man 3 Director Drops A Quantumania Tease On Valentines Day

In addition to continuing character and plot threads from Ant-Man and the Wasp and Avengers: Endgame, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will also tie into the MCU’s Disney+ TV shows by featuring a villain from Loki. Played by Jonathan Majors, Kang the Conqueror, a variant of He Who Remains (introduced in Loki), will oppose Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne. Since Kang is seemingly being set up as the MCU’s next major antagonist after Thanos, this likely won’t be his last appearance in the franchise.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - May 5, 2023

Since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the last of three upcoming appearances by the ragtag team of cosmic heroes, it’s unclear what state they’ll be in. The Guardians will have starring roles in both Thor 4 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, allowing them to properly integrate the alternate universe Gamora into their adventures following the original Gamora’s death in Avengers: Infinity War. Guardians 3 will likely be the team’s final adventure, bringing their respective character arcs to a satisfying close, courtesy of James Gunn.

The Marvels - July 28, 2023

The Marvels will not only be a continuation of Carol Danvers’ galaxy-trotting adventures, but also the first cinematic appearances of Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan. The Marvels also looks to be the MCU film with the most ties to the franchise’s Disney+ shows, with Teyonah Parris debuting as Rambeau in WandaVision and Kamala Khan starring in the Ms. Marvel TV series beforehand. Samuel L. Jackson will also return as Nick Fury following his brief cameo (and Skrull impersonation) in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Fantastic 4 - TBA

Although the mainstream Marvel Comics universe began in 1939 with Namor’s debut, the universe first truly hit its stride in 1961 when the Fantastic Four hit newsstands. As one of Marvel’s most popular properties, the Fantastic Four has, unsurprisingly, had numerous adaptations, though their films have never been particularly successful among viewers. The team will finally be adapted in the MCU in the upcoming film Fantastic 4, though with Jon Watts stepping down from the project in April 2022, it’s unknown who will take over directorial duties.

Blade - TBA

1998’s Blade, starring Wesley Snipes, was the very first successful Marvel Comics film before 2002’s Spider-Man took the superhero film genre to exciting new heights. Now that Marvel Studios has the film rights to Blade, an MCU reboot is planned for the hero, starring Mahershala Ali in his second MCU role since Cornell Stokes in Luke Cage. In an uncredited voice-only cameo, Ali has already appeared as Blade in the MCU, via a post-credits scene in Eternals.

Deadpool 3 - TBA

Ryan Reynolds cemented himself as the definitive live-action version of the fourth-wall-breaking Merc with a Mouth in 2016’s Deadpool and 2018’s Deadpool 2. With Reynolds’ version of Wade Wilson being irreplaceable, he will likely be the only character from 20^th Century Fox’s X-Men film series to join the MCU, with the upcoming Deadpool 3 continuing his bizarre misadventures. With Deadpool’s frequent fourth-wall-breaking, he’s sure to address the fact that he comes from another film franchise in his third outing.

Captain America 4 - TBA

With Steve Rogers having retired and passed down his iconic shield to Sam Wilson in Endgame, the MCU now has a new Captain America. Anthony Mackie took a starring role in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where he accepted his new role and the weight that comes with it, receiving an upgraded suit and wings in the finale. The upcoming fourth Captain America film will continue Wilson’s story as well as Bucky Barnes’, where he may finally put his Winter Soldier past behind him for good.

Shang-Chi 2 - TBA

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was a major success for the MCU’s Phase 4, so a sequel is unsurprisingly in the works. The first film not only introduced a new cast of characters and lore to the MCU, but it also, in typical MCU fashion, teased new adventures for future installments. Not only will the true origin and nature of Shang-Chi’s inherited Ten Ring weapons need to be explained, but his sister, Xialing, now leads the Ten Rings organization, and it’s not clear if she’ll continue her father’s sinister ways or become an ally to Shang-Chi.

X-Men - TBA

Like the Fantastic Four, the X-Men are one of Marvel’s most popular properties, so the announcement of a mutant-centric MCU film is exciting news. Given how large of a presence mutants have in the Marvel Comics universe, it will be tricky to explain where the MCU’s mutants have been since the franchise has gone through three phases without any mention of them. However, the film explains the MCU’s mutants, it’s sure to be a welcome new addition to the MCU franchise.

Spider-Man Homecoming 4 – TBA

Although Spider-Man: No Way Home was a satisfying potential ending to the MCU’s Spider-Man series, the film’s success led to the announcement of three more Spider-Man movies. Thanks to Doctor Strange’s final reality-fixing spell, Peter Parker’s life has been reset, with nobody knowing he exists, let alone that he’s secretly the web-slinging hero. The new films will likely show Peter Parker attending college with a new cast of supporting characters and new villains to face for his alter ego.
