The MCU is a big place and the highly anticipated Moon Knight is coming aboard soon.  The unprecedented connected universe expanded from movies to streaming series on Disney+ in 2021.  Since then, huge hit shows like WandaVision, Loki, and Hawkeye have added tons of new storylines and character arcs to the canon, while giving closure and further insight to important Infinity Saga events.

Moon Knight will be the first streaming series to feature a new superhero in the MCU.  While the character is a formidable addition to the MCU lineup, he does exist within the MCU so there are a lot of in-universe contexts to catch up on, especially for new viewers. This includes what characters are active and available to crossover, what large organizations might be significant to Moon Knight's story, and even multiversal implications.

Moon Knight Takes Place Post "Blip"

The MCU 's decade-long "Infinity Saga" featured over twenty films, all of which led up to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.  These two films centered on Thanos' "Snap", which instantly killed half of all life in the universe, and the Avengers' epic battle to restore that half of life.

Much of the MCU's Phase Four properties have dealt with the consequences of both of these events, including The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series.  In some Moon Knight trailers, eagle-eyed fans have spotted an ad for the Global Repatriation Council, an organization formed to cope with the fallout from 'the Blip.' This is what sets Moon Knight on the timeline post-blip.

The MCU Is A Multiverse

One of the most impressive things about the MCU is its commitment to the in-universe canon, connecting every film via Easter eggs and shared tropes. However, ever since the Loki series, which canonized character variants and multiple timelines, and even more recently the real-life studio crossovers in Spiderman: No Way Home, the MCU's canon has been hugely expanded.

This means that even if Moon Knight takes place post-Blip, the show might exist in an alternate timeline, or universe, from the previous MCU properties.  New variants of existing characters might be played by alternate actors, or may or may not even exist, depending on which universe the Moon Knight show inhabits.

Magic Exists In The MCU

Marvel often grounds its fantastical stories in science-based fiction, as in the cases of Iron Man, Captain America, and Antman franchises.  But magic has played a huge role in more recent properties, like Spiderman: No Way Home, WandaVision, and Loki, and has been declared multiple times as being "real" in the MCU.

Some powerful magical MCU characters have studied magic for years, like Dr. Strange and Agatha Harkness, but some wield magic from a more internal source like Wanda Maximoff.  Moon Knight in the comics gains his superpowers from the Egyptian moon deity Khonsu, denoting a supernatural source, but fans have yet to see whether his skills are learned or based on natural talent.

Time Traveling Is Possible Via Both Science And Magic

Tony Stark figures out time travel in Avengers: Endgame

Time travel was integral to the Avengers' victory in Avengers: Endgame, and as Dr. Strange had been "snapped" away in Avengers: Infinity War, they used quantum physics and Pym Tech. Science-based time travel was also featured in Loki, as the Time Variance Authority (TVA) did not allow magic in their operations.

Time travel through magic had also been possible as seen in Dr. Strange, although his main time manipulation tool, the time stone, was atomized in Endgame. That doesn't rule out magical time travel for the MCU though, because characters who use magical multi-dimensional travel could still potentially jump timelines, effectively traveling through time.

Small Details From Moon Knight Could Build The Future Of The MCU

The MCU's Infinity Saga didn't start out centering Thanos and infinity stones but rather built a foundation with intimate and richly detailed origin stories.  The more intricate crossover stories drew details from each story and wove them together for the broader narrative. For example, the first Avengers movie utilized Iron Man's location, Captain America's MacGuffin, and Thor's villain.

Phase Four might be setting up a similar trend as many of its current and upcoming properties either expand existing characters, like Wanda Maximoff and Loki, or introduce new ones, like Shang Chi, Kate Bishop (Hawkeye), and Yelena Belova (Black Widow).  Anything from Moon Knight is fair game then for building the future connected storylines of the MCU.

SWORD Is A Potential Threat (Or Ally)

Previously, many MCU plots featured tensions between large, governmental, and government-adjacent organizations like SHIELD and Hydra. However, both of those organizations fell in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron. But in WandaVision, the MCU introduced SWORD (Sentient Weapons Observation and Response Department.)

It's tough to tell whether SWORD will be good or bad, as their actions in WandaVision were morally dubious, and SHIELD underwent a similar slow-burn takeover by Hydra. But viewers of Moon Knight should be aware of this American organization, especially since Marc Spector's identity was confirmed as American in a recent trailer.

The Global Repatriation Council Is Operative

The Global Repatriation Council was introduced in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series as an international organization meant to help victims of the Blip regain normal lives.  An ad for the GRC appears in a Moon Knight trailer, confirming its existence in the show.

Despite the good intentions it touts, the GRC was shown in TFATWS to have morally questionable practices as they operate.  Given Marc Spector's mercenary work, possibly outside the law, and the GRC's militant tendencies, the viewers might see some conflict arising from the organization.

There Is Lots Of Potential For Crossovers From Other MCU Properties

Depending on how long after the Blip Moon Knight takes place, there is a long, exciting list of characters who can possibly cameo.  After Yelena Belova's show-stealing appearance in Hawkeye and Sharon Carter's bombshell inclusion in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Phase Four's crossover possibilities are huge.

Some of the major players in the MCU at this time are John Walker (from TFATWS), Dane Whitman (The Black Knight), Blade, or Xialing, Shang Chi's sister who took over their late father's Ten Rings crime empire at the end of the movie. Any of these characters would make enthralling friends or foes of Moon Knight.

Kang The Conqueror Exists in the MCU

A variant of Kang the Conqueror called "He Who Remains" appeared in the final episode of Loki, officially introducing the multiverse, and foreshadowing a multiversal war.  What he didn't disclose in the episode was that the time-traveling character of Kang, who had also spent time ruling in ancient Egypt.

Ancient Egypt has been shown to be integral to Moon Knight's story, as his powers come from the Egyptian Moon god, Khonsu. Another Kang connection is that his multiversal love interest, Ravonna Renslayer, a variant of whom is a major character in Loki, was also an acolyte of Khonsu in the comics.  These stories sharing ancient Egypt as an important setting implies an amazing crossover from these characters.

The X-Men Connection

Longtime fans of the MCU have been hungry for an X-Men crossover for years. These franchises interact in the comics, but until recently have belonged to different movie studios.  But with Professor X's confirmed role in the upcoming Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, the inclusion of X-Men characters and plotlines is finally underway.

Moon Knight is an apt place for an X-Men introduction because of the importance of Apocalypse and his time spent ruling in ancient Egypt.  Apocalypse, whom Moon Knight star Oscar Isaac played in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, is hugely powerful and could be a major villain in this show, or even the general MCU moving forward.
