Filmmaker Josh Boone revealed his dream project that he wants to make someday: a film adaptation of the Power Pack comics. Though the director is currently known for his dark and gritty take on the upcoming movie The New Mutants, Boone apparently has his sights set on something a bit more kid-friendly.

The Power Pack is a team of preteeen superheroes from Marvel that first appeared in their own series in the 80s. The story follows Alex, Julie, Jack, and Katie Power, four superpowered siblings often saving the day without adult supervision. The Power Pack series was relaunched in 2005 aimed at young readers as a sort of first step to getting children interested in comic books. The four kid heroes have remained popular over the years, and even made a return to the comics earlier this year. However, the one thing they haven’t done is appear in a feature film.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Boone indicated that a Power Pack movie is something he really wants to see brought to the screen. He says his love for the Power Pack team was inspired by his daughter and her love of the comics. “Really, my favorite thing that I read every issue of to my daughter when she was growing up was [Power Pack]. I do love Power Pack,” he says. The director talks about how he would read every issue of Power Pack to his daughter when she was young, and that got him thinking about what a Power Pack movie would look like. The way he describes it, Boone makes a good case for why a kid-centered superhero team would be a success for the MCU: “I think like a kids' Marvel movie would be awesome, with the aliens coming and all the dueling alien races, giving them their powers and all that. That would be so much fun.”

Though Power Pack is a lesser known Marvel property, Boone might be thinking on the right track when he says he wants to bring the kid heroes to the MCU. In a 2018 interview, Marvel’s Kevin Feige revealed that the company was looking to adapt the Power Pack comics for the big screen. There hasn’t been any additional news about the possible film for two years, but that doesn’t mean that a Power Pack movie is entirely out of the realm of possibility.

In fact, adapting Power Pack for film could give Marvel a new family-friendly franchise and help diversify their content. Over the past few years, superheroes movies from both Marvel and DC have trended towards grittier, more adult stories, which has been exciting for grown-up audiences but may leave young children feeling left out. Creating a blockbuster superhero movie like Power Pack that is for kids and about kids can fill that niche that studios so often forget about.
