CONTENT WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Marvel's Eternals.

Like all of the movies that are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Eternals is an action movie. There is plenty of conflict solved by a massive fight sequence. At its heart, however, the movie is about the relationships between the main characters. In addition to the Eternals at the center of the film, there are also those that create them, and the humans they befriend.

The most important relationships to the story of the movie should be considered the best, but there are good and bad aspects to all of them. The very best relationship in Eternals is one built on mutual respect, understanding, and the ultimate form of trust.

The Eternals And The Celestials

As a result of the Eternals joining the MCU, there are many cosmic beings that are openly part of the universe. Some of those are the Celestials, previously believed to be extinct. With the Celestials being the ones to create the Eternals, it's clear they've got a whole lot of power at their disposal.

The Celestials, specifically Arishem, keep the Eternals in the dark about their true purpose: birthing more Celestials. They use the Eternals for their own purposes, just as they do the Deviants. That's not exactly a relationship filled with understanding or respect.

Sprite And Ikaris

Sprite doesn't have the same ease of blending in with humanity that the rest of the Eternals do. That's because she's been created to appear as a teenager - forever. Bitter about being unable to age, Sprite tends to lash out at people around her. She's also harbored feelings for Ikaris for potentially thousands of years.

Ikaris, for his part, treats Sprite like the child she appears to be. He has nicknames for her that denote her small stature - and he's the only person Sprite doesn't call out for treating her like a child. Their relationship has a very large power imbalance, as Sprite tends to go along with anything he says, and whether he consciously uses that to his advantage or not is unclear. Ikaris does, however, always seem to just expect her to follow his lead.

Sersi And Ikaris

Ikaris and Sersi marry in Eternals

Sersi and Ikaris are advertised as the great love of the movie. Despite falling for one another pretty early on in their time on Earth, their relationship only appears in the movie in brief flashes. They spend thousands of years pining for one another before admitting their feelings, which should seem romantic, but it's very awkward instead.

Ikaris also simply abandons Sersi when he learns of their true purpose for the Celestials. Unlike in the Eternals comics, Ikaris doesn't have the same affinity for humanity she does, so he offers her no explanation. Ikaris leaves and shows up just when she's started her life over and fallen in love again to make things complicated for her. Rather than attempt to talk things through with her, or even have Ajak offer up an explanation on his behalf, Ikaris throws away everything they have only to come back and expect that Sersi will forgive him.

Ajak And The Eternals

It's made abundantly clear that Ajak loves her Eternals family. She treats them all like her children rather than her soldiers, encouraging them all to find love and to find their own purpose outside of the team on Earth. Ajak is a nurturer and a healer, but she also is never completely honest with them.

Ajak keeps the biggest secret from them all: their purpose to help planets birth new Celestials. She also places a lot of pressure on Ikaris when she has him keep her secret for her as well. Again, she places pressure on Sersi when she chooses the latter to replace her without Sersi knowing anything about their mission. Ajak might care deeply for her fellow Eternals, but she still doesn't make the best choices for them.

Sersi, Dane, And Sprite

Sprite might hate feeling like the child of the Eternals, but she still gets lonely when left alone for thousands of years. She ends up deciding to find Sersi, and the two have an unlikely friendship. Sersi doesn't treat Sprite like a child, but like an equal.

Likewise, Sprite, even when using her sarcasm as armor, still manages to befriend Sersi's new love interest, Dane. She tells him stories about their time saving the planet, and he actually ends up believing them. There might be a lot of bickering among the three, but it's clear that they're all true friends who would fight for one another. Even when Sprite takes Ikaris' side late in the movie, it's made obvious that fighting Sersi pains her.

Phastos And His Family

Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Haaz Sleiman as Phastos Husband with their son in Eternals

Phastos is the one Eternal the audience sees actually voice that he's given up on humanity. When he sees how destructive humanity can be, how much loss they can create from one single advancement in technology, he takes a step back. Phastos also manages to find love with a human being, though.

When Sersi and Ikaris find him in the modern day, he doesn't just have a husband, but a son. Though his family doesn't know his thousands of years worth of history, Phastos does tell his husband the truth, and when he decides to help Sersi stop a Celestial from being born, it's with the goal of protecting his family in mind.

Kingo And Karun

Kingo loves the spotlight, but he also doesn't seem to mind having to share it with a friend. He doesn't keep anything from Karun. Karun might be his valet, but he's also his closest friend. He knows all of Kingo's history as an Eternal, and he's ready to be right by his side as the Eternals have their reunion.

Spending decades working together means that the two know one another very well. Karun doesn't just take orders from Kingo; he takes it upon himself to document the Eternals reuniting the way he wants to. When Kingo is using his powers, Karun is right there next to him getting everything on camera - and seemingly having fun while doing it. When Kingo decides to walk away from the fight, Karun doesn't hesitate to go with him, wanting to spend what might be the end of the world with the people he cares about.

Sersi And Humanity

Sersi might have two romantic love stories going on in the movie, but the greatest love story of them all is her relationship with humanity. She is the first to step foot on Earth and offer up a friendly face to the humans whose lives the Eternals save. She also loves Earth the moment she sees it from the ship.

It's no wonder that Sersi fully immerses herself in the culture of wherever she's located. She marries Ikaris in an ancient ceremony, she becomes a teacher in the modern day, and she refuses to turn her back on the people she's lived amongst for thousands of years.

Makkari And Druig

The relationship between Makkari and Druig is one that takes the audience - and their fellow Eternals - by surprise. Both characters are different from their Eternals comic counterparts, so even comic book fans wouldn't have seen it coming.

Makkari has a zest for life, and for potentially priceless artifacts, that can't be matched. Druig, with his ability to control people, is a little more cynical. Their very different points of view actually balance one another out. Makkari keeps Druig from getting in trouble with Ajak during the early days of their mission, and he does the same for her. They always have one another's backs, and they exist on equal footing, which seems to be rare amongst so many of the Eternals' relationships. There's only one relationship better than theirs in the movie.

Thena And Gilgamesh

Thena and Gilgamesh are arguably two of the most powerful Eternals in the movie. They work well together against the Deviants with his strength and her affinity for weapons. They also work well together when it comes to domestic life.

It's never explicitly stated whether Thena and Gilgamesh are friends, family, or romantic partners in the movie. To the audience, it doesn't matter. What matters is that when Thena's mind begins to play tricks on her, Gilgamesh is there for her - for centuries. She trusts him to care for her, but also to end her life if she gets too dangerous. In turn, he builds a life with her, getting to explore his interests, like cooking, and giving them both a permanent home instead of a battle to fight.
