Warning: SPOILERS for Loki episode 5, "Journey into Mystery."

The God of Mischief's glorious purpose is finally revealed in Loki episode 5: it's Sylvie. Marvel Studios brought back the pre-redemption version of Tom Hiddleston's character in the Disney+ series. Arrested by the Time Variance Authority after deviating from his fate when he escaped during Avengers: Endgame's New York time heist, Loki L1130, as dubbed by the organization, was tapped to help Agent Mobius M. Mobius track a rogue Loki variant who had been wreaking havoc.

That variant turned out to be a female Loki named Sylvie. Upon her introduction at the end of Loki episode 2, there was confusion as to who Sophia Di Martino's character really was with the most widespread speculation that she might be Enchantress based on her name, powers of enchantment, and blonde hair. Eventually, it was confirmed that she is indeed a Loki who was arrested by the TVA when she was just a young girl. It's still unknown what her Nexus Event was, and Ravonna Renslayer, who was then the hunter who took Sylvie into custody, claimed she didn't remember what Sylvie's Nexus Event was when asked about it. Regardless, Sylvie's mission has been what it's always been: find out and defeat whoever is behind the TVA, especially now it has been revealed that the Time-Keepers were merely robots.

It's Sylvie's story and drive to abolish the TVA that motivates Loki to do the same. Despite a less-than-ideal first meeting, the pair have developed a strong bond, starting from when they had nobody to rely on but each other when escaping the doomed moon of Lamentis-1. Looking back, meeting Sylvie was the true catalyst to Loki's evolution in the Disney+ series. Initially, he was planning to manipulate his way into the Time-Keepers in the hopes of taking over the organization–predictable as always. But after learning the truth about the TVA, including Sylvie's kidnapping from her version of Asgard, the God of Mischief pivoted and is now fully committed to supporting her cause all the way. As it turns out, Sylvie is Loki's glorious purpose; he's decided to be of service to her by joining her in this mission to unravel the mystery behind the Time-Keepers and TVA. For once, Loki is putting someone else above his own interests, and that's Sylvie.

Loki Episode 5 Loki and Sylvie Holding Hands

Loki even admitted as much in the penultimate episode. After finding himself in the unknown void on the heels of his pruning, he made it clear that he needed to go back to the TVA. The Council of Lokis, who had been stuck in the dumpster realm for quite some time, attempted to explain to him that it's virtually impossible to escape the ruined world at the end of time. However, Loki was adamant and when asked if it was because he left his glorious purpose there, he reluctantly answered yes. While he didn't specifically name Sylvie, it's safe to assume that it's she he was referring to. After all, he was about to confess his feelings to her when Loki was pruned by the TVA and Ravonna. Regardless if he wanted to go back to the TVA to finish what he was saying or because he wanted to ensure that she was safe, the important thing is, once they were separated, his first instinct was to find a way to get back to her.

Admittedly, not everyone is sold on Loki and Sylvie's romance in the show. But even if their relationship never becomes fully romantic, there's no denying Sylvie's impact on Loki. Granted, with an assist from Mobius, Sylvie's existence has almost single-handedly redeemed the Asgardian prince, something that it years to happen in the MCU movies without as much growth for Loki. So despite the controversial love line, it's clear that for Loki, love of Sylvie, whatever form it takes, is the God of Mischief's glorious purpose.
