Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania continues Marvel's ability to set up Kang as an Avengers villain better than it did with Thanos. Although it is widely agreed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe delivered on Thanos being the Avengers' biggest villain to date. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame somewhat surprisingly made the Mad Titan such a compelling villain with only minimal build-up. Audiences saw Thanos in two post-credits scenes and briefly in Guardians of the Galaxy before he fought the Avengers and wiped out half of all life in the universe. Still, Marvel seems to have learned some lessons to set up Kang even better.

Whereas Thanos had three minor appearances before becoming the main villain for two Avengers movies, Marvel is dedicating plenty of time to setting up Kang before he fights the Avengers in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Nearly an entire episode of Loki season 1 was spent explaining Kang and the previous multiverse war. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will now showcase another Kang variant and the power he holds from the Quantum Realm. Kang should also be in Loki season 2, and he could always pop up elsewhere. All of this should mean audiences clearly understand Kang and what he wants even before he fights the Avengers.

Ant-Man 3 Proves How Dangerous Kang Is To The Avengers

Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania Trailer Hide Villain Kang MODOK

The Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania trailer is evidence enough that Kang will be a massive threat to the Avengers when they cross paths. The footage establishes Janet van Dyne's fear of the Quantum Realm, which seems to be associated with Kang from her decades of being trapped there. Ant-Man 3's trailer indicates that Kang has conquered the Quantum Realm and uses it as his base of operation. While the marketing has not shown Kang in action yet, it did tease the massive army he has already assembled. The strength of these fighters is not known, but the size is quite impressive and enough to keep the Avengers mighty busy.

The biggest tease of Kang's threat level was cut from Ant-Man 3's trailer, though. The version that played at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 ended with Kang asking Ant-Man if he was one of the Avengers he's killed in the past. There is no way to interpret the line other than a clear tease from Marvel that Kang is a severe threat to the Avengers and that he is powerful enough to kill some members. Even without knowing which Avengers this Kang variant killed before, the moment gives audiences and Ant-Man reason to fear this new threat.

Will Kang Be A Better MCU Villain Than Thanos?

Thanos and Kang

Thanks to Marvel's improved Kang setup compared to Thanos, there is a chance that Jonathan Majors' villain will be an even better MCU villain than Josh Brolin's. Kang is getting plenty of screen time to establish his motivations, backstory, powers, and so on. Instead of waiting for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to show his threat level, Marvel is repeatedly establishing Kang, potentially even tying him to Shang-Chi's Ten Rings or Ms. Marvel's bangle. With the combination of Marvel's improved setup, Kang's multiverse ambitions, and electric performances by Majors, Kang has the makings to be a better MCU villain than Thanos.
