The action and superhero excitement are obviously big draws in the MCU but these movies have also gained a reputation for being hilarious. While there are certainly plenty of serious moments, there are also so many funny characters ready to lighten the mood including some of the iconic heroes themselves.

Whether these characters live up to their comedic style from the comics or were turned into humorous creations just for the movie, they provide big laughs. And Ranker has selected which of the many MCU characters are the funniest of all.

Groot

Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy

It's quite impressive that Groot is able to be considered one of the funniest MCU characters given his limited vocabulary. But the fact that he responds to everything with "I am Groot" has been used to surprisingly great comedic effect thus far.

While Groot and Baby Groot are two different characters technically speaking, they share some great comedic moments. From Groot's goofy smiling after brutally killing his enemies to Baby Groot proudly showing off the severed toe he found, adorable tree creatures seem to have a dark sense of humor.

Iron Man

Tony Stark lying on the floor after The Battle of New York in The Avengers

While Tony Stark was never a very amusing character in the comics before the MCU, Robert Downy Jr. made the role his own and arguably set the tone for the entire cinematic universe. His sarcastic and arrogant ways strike the right balance between annoying and charming.

No matter the situation they are dealing with, Tony can always be counted on to deliver a hilarious one-liner. And his penchant for coming up with funny nicknames for his fellow heroes helps to ground them all a little more.

Spider-Man

Peter Parker looking concerned in Infinity War

Spider-Man has always been a bit of a smart-mouthed hero which makes sense given he is a teenager. But the MCU's Peter Parker is funny, not so much for taunting his enemies, but rather because of his fanboy approach to being an Avenger.

Peter is constantly in awe of the superhero world around him which makes it endearing as well as being funny. His meeting with Doctor Strange and the use of their "made-up names" is particularly memorable. He adds a youthful humor to the universe that works very well.

Loki

Loki smiling while chained up in Thor: Ragnarok

Given the fact that he is one of the most notable villains in the MCU, it is a bit surprising that Loki would be considered one of its funniest characters. But it is hard to deny that there is a certain wit to Loki in those earlier movies, especially with his dry-witted insults to Thor.

But it was in Thor: Ragnarok that he really showed off his sillier side. From his hilarious reaction to seeing Hulk again after his last beating to his angry assertion of "I have been falling for thirty minutes," the trickster god is surprisingly funny.

Drax

Dave Bautista smiling as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy

Drax was one of the most intimidating members of the Guardians of the Galaxy at first. But it didn't take long to reveal that there was a very amusing person underneath that tough exterior – even if he had no idea that he was funny.

While he is still a formidable warrior, Drax has inspired many MCU memes. His very literal way of viewing the world, his attempts to turn invisible, and his questioning of "why is Gamora?" make for some of the biggest laughs in the galaxy.

Luis

Luis showing excitement about their plans in Ant-Man.

Luis isn't even one of the main heroes in the MCU, yet he has become a fan-favorite character simply by being so endlessly funny. Scott Lang's ex-convict best friend has a fun upbeat energy and way with words that mix for some very funny moments.

As great as it is to see superheroes battle and save the world, listening to Luis recount some of his very detailed and fast-paced stories are some of the most enjoyable moments the MCU has ever created.

Korg

Korg waving in Thor Ragnarok

Korg is another standout sidekick in the MCU who has grown into a beloved character in his own right. Though the sight of this rock monster might be imposing at first, as soon as Korg speaks with his soft and friendly delivery, it's hard not to instantly love him.

As he is played by Taika Waititi himself, Korg is the perfect character to bring the filmmaker's unique sense of humor into the cinematic universe. Like Luis, he is a character who fans could listen to speak for an entire movie and never stop laughing.

Ant-Man

Paul Rudd on the Avengers compound in Ant-Man

The idea of making Paul Rudd a superhero was a genius idea and cemented Ant-Man as perhaps the most charming Avenger. The Ant-Man movies are more comedic overall, but Rudd really brings the laughs with his everyman hero who is constantly out of his element.

He even stole the show from all the other Marvel heroes in Captain America: Civil War with his crush on Captain America and his hidden talent. While he might not be the toughest of the heroes, he is one of the most lovable.

Thor

Thor sees Hulk and cheers in Thor: Ragnarok

In the earlier days of the MCU, there are likely few fans who would have considered Thor one of the funniest characters. However, after a couple of lackluster solo movies, the God of Thunder was given an overhaul leaning more into this comedic side.

The change was partially due to Taika Waititi taking over but Chris Hemsworth also proved he had excellent comedy chops all along. He was not afraid to make the hero look like a doofus, he explored his grief in Avengers: Endgame in a funny yet powerful way, and he brought the character back to life. Fans are already excited to see what other fun he brings to Thor: Love and Thunder.

Rocket

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Rocket Raccoon with Blaster

The point that a talking raccoon became a popular character in the MCU seemed to be when everyone saw how successful the cinematic universe was really going to be. But unlike most talking animals in Disney movies, Rocket has a serious attitude which makes him such a funny character.

His intense bouts of rage coming from a furry little creature are hilarious as is his strange obsession with stealing artificial body parts. And Bradley Cooper's amazing voice performance should not be overlooked in bringing the character to life.
