Fantastic Four's latest development can make WandaVision's Reed Richards' theory a reality. After the culmination of the Infinity Saga through Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios took a break before kicking things off for Phase 4. Amidst a string of delays and rescheduling due to the coronavirus pandemic, MCU's Multiverse Saga was ultimately launched by WandaVision, its first Disney+ endeavor as well which centers on Wanda Maximoff's (Elizabeth Olsen) attempt at living the ideal life in Westview. Despite having a self-contained narrative, one line in the show was perceived to be Marvel Studios' first reference to Fantastic Four's Reed Richards.

In WandaVision episode 5, just as Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), Jimmy Woo (Randall Park), and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) were brainstorming about how they can get back to Westview without alerting SWORD, not to mention in a safe way, there was a mention of an aerospace engineer. Monica suggested that this trusted ally would be able to help her. Due to Mister Fantastic's expertise in Marvel Comics, theories began percolating that this was Marvel Studios' way of introducing the Fantastic Four's leader. Ultimately, the aerospace engineer was revealed to be Major Goodner (Rachael Thompson).

The debut of Goodner effectively debunked theories that Maria's aerospace engineer friend was Reed Richards. Understandably, it caused disappointment, but Marvel Studios still has a way to rectify this in light of the news that WandaVision director Matt Shakman is in talks to helm the Fantastic Four reboot film. Initially set to be spearheaded by MCU Spider-Man trilogy's Jon Watts, the filmmaker's exit paved the way for Kevin Feige to reach out to Shakman to take over the project. Knowing full well about the buzz surrounding the mystery regarding the aerospace engineer's identity in WandaVision, Shakman can make the creative decision to retcon Goodner's reveal, finding a way to make her a decoy and, instead, eventually confirming that Reed Richards is indeed Monica's friend.

What Reed Richards' Possible WandaVision Reference Means For Fantastic Four

Fantastic Four

In the event that Marvel Studios decide to walk back on the identity of the aerospace engineer in WandaVision, it could mean a couple of big things for the Fantastic Four's upcoming MCU debut. Months after the project was officially confirmed by Feige himself, the revival film is already set to kickstart MCU Phase 6 with the Fantastic Four arriving before the X-Men and is confirmed to premiere on November 2024. For starters, it suggests that at least Reed Richards already has ties to Monica and, perhaps even SWORD by the time the Maximoff Anomaly took place. The fact that she's confident that she could rely on her aerospace engineer friend means that they know each other pretty well. It isn't outside the realm of possibility that Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) also knew Richards. Secondly, this means that he's already an established player in the MCU who's only waiting for his proper introduction.

If Marvel Studios decides to go this route, it would be a great way to highlight the MCU's interconnected storytelling. For what it's worth, walking back WandaVision's aerospace engineer reveal won't be the first time that they retconned a previous project to serve a bigger narrative. It would also emphasize how much Marvel's Fantastic Four might have been a silent player in the franchise long before they get formally introduced in the Fantastic Four film.
