The highly anticipated Spider-Man: No Way Home contained many shocks and surprises for fans, and the biggest came at the very end. The final post-credits scene for the movie wasn't a scene at all, but the first trailer for the upcoming Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness movie. While the trailer hasn't been released online officially yet, fans who've seen the movie know it contains major reveals about the future of the MCU.

The trailer makes clear there are consequences to Doctor Strange's actions in No Way Home, and these propel him forward into a story that likely brings into alignment other aspects of the multiverse that have been explored in the MCU. Fans of 2021 MCU streaming series like WandaVision and What If..? were rewarded in the trailer for the movie, which is set to release in May 0f 2022.

Time May Be Broken

Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange with injured hand and broken watch in Doctor Strange movie.

The trailer gives nothing away in terms of plot, only that something has gone wrong after Doctor Strange performs a spell to erase all memory of Peter Parker being Spider-Man at the end of No Way Home. The suggestion is possibly that time could be broken, as the trailer opens with a shot of a broken watch with Strange's reflection in it.

The trailer features many shots that may not be from the same time period or even universe, possibly indicating that time is somehow confused in the movie. The watch will be familiar to fans of the character. Doctor Strange wore the watch in his first movie from 2016, even after it had been damaged in the same car crash that injured his hands and drove him to seek out magic in the first place.

The Universe Is Disintegrating

Doctor Strange uses his powers in What If? animated series.

One of the most intriguing shots in the trailer is Doctor Strange walking out of the Sanctum Santorum to see a massive building tilting over on its side. It's also disintegrating into dust, as is every other building visible in the shot. The scene is highly reminiscent of the disintegrating world from episode four of What If..?.

That episode featured one of the most powerful variants of Doctor Strange acquiring more and more power to save the life of Christine Palmer. The trailer suggests a number of links between the upcoming movie and the episode.

Christine Is Marrying... Someone

Doctor Strange and Christine hold hands outside at night in What If...?

In that episode of What If..?, Christine and Doctor Strange are in a romantic relationship and his love for her drives him to consume dark magic. In the trailer, Christine is seen in a wedding gown in a church, clearly about to marry someone. It could be Doctor Strange as he is present, but the brief shot also suggests it could be someone else.

The timeline of the trailer is unclear, so it's hard to tell if this is in the past or the present, or even the main universe of the MCU. One thing that's certain is that Christine will play a role in the movie, likely to have a huge impact on Strange's story arc.

Kamar-Taj Comes Under Attack

Doctor Strange's Kamar-Taj

There are a number of brief shots showing the mystical temple of Kamar-Taj coming under magical attack. It's unclear who the attackers are, but it's a major battle involving Doctor Strange, Wong, and other disciples of magic at the remote temple.

Wong is shown to be injured in the course of the battle, and he also wields a sword against his attackers. It's not clear if the sword is mystical in nature or he's simply fallen back on practical weapons against a more powerful enemy.

Mordo Is Back

The attacker could very well be Mordo, who makes an appearance in the trailer. Mordo's look has changed since the first Doctor Strange movie, with a green and gold costume and longer hair as seen in his just revealed Marvel Legends action figure. Mordo tells Doctor Strange his 'desecration of time and space won't go unpunished."

At the end of the first movie, Mordo was enraged by both The Ancient One and Doctor Strange's use of dark magic and it seems that his anger boils over in a major way in the upcoming movie. It remains to be seen if Mordo will be directly tied to the multiverse plot, or he will be more of a sub-plot.

America Chavez Is Part Of The Story

The MCU seems to be building to the Young Avengers team in a big way with numerous characters like Kate Bishop and Kid Loki introduced into the MCU. The trailer reveals another in America Chavez, also known as Ms. America in the comics.

It's not clear what her role in the movie will be, but she makes sense in the context of the multiverse angle. She can knock open holes in reality, which will likely allow her to travel between different dimensions and realities in the movie.

The Scarlet Witch Is Not The Villain

Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch in WandaVision Episode 9 Post Credits Scene

The Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful magicians in Marvel Comics, and now in the MCU, even more powerful with The Darkhold. Speculation had centered on Wanda being the villain in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, but the trailer makes clear she's not.

Doctor Strange actually seeks out Wanda's help with his problem with the multiverse, telling her he's not there about Westview. It's not clear where Wanda is in the trailer, but in a visual with interesting implications, she's pruning branches of trees, not unlike He Who Remains is ruining timelines in Loki.

Wong Has Leveled Up

Benedict Wong in Shang-Chi

Wong reveals in No Way Home that he became the Sorcerer Supreme after Doctor Strange was snapped. He is likely still the Sorcerer Supreme in the upcoming movie and may have leveled up in many ways because he's wearing his most elaborate costume to date in the new trailer.

Along with his new sword, Wong is wearing a more ornate costume with red and gold elements. It could be a result of his change in status, and Wong may have leveled up in power as well if the sword he wields is mystical in nature.

The Debut Of Gargantos

Blended image of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange from the MCU and Gargantos from Marvel comics.

Shuma-Gorath is one of the most powerful cosmic beings in the Marvel Universe, and the subject of much speculation when it comes to the villain of the upcoming movie. A tentacle monster appears in the trailer, attacking New York City, and while it looks like Shuma-Gorath, it seems that this isn't solid confirmation.

LEGO set from the movie leaked and revealed the monster's name is actually Gargantos. Gargantos is a separate character in Marvel Comics continuity, though the MCU may conflate him Shuma-Gorath, or possibly make Gargantos an agent of the larger monster.

What If..? Doctor Strange Is Seemingly In

Promotional image of Doctor Strange from the What If..? animated series.

The biggest surprise of the trailer is Doctor Strange encountered another version of himself. This version is wearing a darker costume and clearly isn't on the good side of the equation. He appears to be the Doctor Strange from the What If..? animated series, though that remains to be seen.

If he is, it would come as no surprise given the connections to the multiverse, the disintegrating world, a tentacle monster (seen numerous times in the series), and the evil Strange himself. It sets up fascinating possibilities and links within the larger MCU and promises a fight for the ages.
