Deadpool 3 is currently scheduled for a November 2024 release date, with Marvel having the opportunity to rectify a Fox X-Men mistake through the use of their flagship team: the Avengers. With Deadpool 3 promising to be the MCU's first R-rated movie, continuing the same story from Deadpool and Deadpool 2 in the meta way only Wade Wilson makes possible, the transition from one franchise to the next will be interesting to see. While curiosity remains on how the MCU will handle the character, there's no denying the vast amount of story potential the switch could bring about.

Aside from his planned team-up with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, there's no other word on exactly what Marvel plans to do with Reynolds' character in Deadpool 3. Obviously, coexisting in a universe that includes Spider-Man, Daredevil, the Avengers, and the Guardians of the Galaxy gives Marvel no shortage of options to explore, not only in Deadpool 3, but also in his future after the Multiverse Saga.

Deadpool Never Properly Crossed Over With The X-Men In Fox's Franchise

Split Image of Fox's X-Men and Deadpool

One of the storytelling opportunities Marvel will have at its disposal could be used to correct a mistake made Fox. Despite being part of Fox's X-Men universe, Deadpool never fully crossed over with the team outside of a few recurring characters. Should Deadpool join the Avengers beginning with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which is set for release less than a year after Deadpool 3, Marvel can avoid the same course taken by Fox. The most overt X-Men crossover found in Fox's Deadpool movie came from the characters of Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, yet only one - Colossus - is considered a major X-Men character. Plus, Fox created its own Colossus for the movie, thus lessening any real X-Men link his involvement would have created.

While this worked for the stories of both Deadpool and Deadpool 2, the latter film featured cameos from the young X-Men team found in the "prequel" series that began with X-Men: First Class. This hinted at potential crossovers with Deadpool in the future, which Dark Phoenix - the only mainline X-Men movie after this - failed to pay off. The same can be said with X-Men: Apocalypse which was released a year after Deadpool, failing to involve the latter character in its proceedings. Fox never tried to build off Deadpool's success in its main Marvel franchise, but that doesn't mean the MCU is poised to go down the same road.

Deadpool Joining The Avengers Would Make His MCU Involvement Better

While Deadpool does not immediately stand out as a perfect candidate for the Avengers, it would make his MCU inclusion much better. With Deadpool 3 continuing the character's story in Marvel's Phase 6, it is safe to assume he will be a big part of the overarching story of the MCU's Multiverse Saga, given his transition from one universe to another. Also, Deadpool 3's place in Phase 6 is surrounded by Fantastic Four, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars. This points to Deadpool 3 being potentially more important than other films to the MCU's second saga, or even its third going into Phase 7.

This importance could be realized through Deadpool playing a part in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars. Perhaps not as an official member of the team, Deadpool could be used akin to how the Guardians and Doctor Strange fit into Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, as these were characters who helped in the fighting but weren't official Avengers members. Regardless, putting the Merc with a Mouth in Avengers 5 would make Deadpool's MCU inclusion feel more natural if he were to be part of the overall story, rather than more of a spin-off franchise the Deadpool movies were treated as at Fox, something that could be seeded in 2024's Deadpool 3.
