The release of Avengers: Infinity War will mark Marvel Studios’ 10-year anniversary, a historic movie event that promises to unite a wide variety of characters spawning from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A staggering number, over 60 characters are set to appear in Infinity War, with over 20 of them being our decade-old heroes. Together they seem virtually unstoppable, but with the arrival of Thanos, who’s in quest for the six Infinity Stones, the Avengers and company will face their ultimate test.
Now, with the sheer amount of heroes and villains in Avengers: Infinity War, there’s already a wide power level dynamic that’s bound to capsize the film if more are added to the fold. Indeed, even though Infinity War is packing a large ensemble of characters, there are some unlisted characters that are just too powerful to make into the film at this point in the game. With characters like Vision, Scarlet Witch, Hulk, Doctor Strange, Thor, Thanos, and the Black Order, other powerful characters in the MCU have no choice but to be benched this time around.
When speaking about the following characters, it's better to say "with great power comes no availability."
Here are 15 MCU Characters That Are Too Powerful To Be In Infinity War.
Dormammu
Making his MCU debut in 2016’s Doctor Strange, Dormammu is a literal force to be reckoned with. The ruler of the dark dimension is so powerful that Doctor Strange was only able to defeat him via the famous Time Stone trick that we all know and love. But no bargain with Marvel Studios will help this character get a ticket to April’s Infinity War.
The scope of Dormammu’s powers are still unknown and it is likely that we’ll be seeing him again in a future Doctor Strange sequel. Perhaps that's sole reason why Dormammu will not appear in Avengers: Infinity War--Marvel might be prepping him up to become the new climactic tentpole villain akin to Thanos. Better to save him for a future Avengers film, or else Infinity War might end a little earlier than expected.
Surtur
Surtur, the ruler of of Muspelheim, also made his MCU debut in Thor: Ragnarok, and as you might recall, he was the one who dealt Hela the final blow. In effect, not only did he supposedly destroy Hela, but he destroyed all of Asgard in the process. The Ragnarok myth came to fruition.
Where does this leave Surtur? It’s unknown whether Surtur will ever return in a future MCU film, since his prime purpose-- to fulfill Ragnarok-- has already been carried out.
With the vast amount of power he has, he would definitely outbalance the already overly-packed ensemble of characters in Avengers: Infinity War. Though it would be pretty amazing seeing Surtur wield the Infinity Gauntlet, alas, one can only wish.
Hela
The goddess of death made her MCU debut in last year’s Thor: Ragnarok. Revealed to be Thor and Loki’s secret evil sister, she promised to take over the universe, only to be defeated by a rejuvenated Thor and his Revengers.
Though Ragnarok ended with the supposed destruction of Hela, that’s still no confirmation that she is actually gone for good - especially since we didn’t see a body. Given that she is the Goddess of Death, why should anything as petty as losing her life stop Hela?
Nevertheless, it’s unlikely we’ll see Hela in Avengers: Infinity War. She is already more powerful than Thor, who’s now more powerful than ever before. While many fans expect a Thanos-Hela romance in the MCU, that’s probably a tale best suited for The Avengers 4 or later.
Celestial Star-Lord
Peter Quill/Star-Lord will appear in Avengers: Infinity War this April, but isn’t it very convenient for Thanos and his Black Order that Peter lost his Celestial abilities in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? In the latter film it was revealed that Star-Lord carried the Celestial gene. His reconnection with Ego, his father, allowed Star-Lord to discover his secret powers. These powers allowed him to conjure a variety of different manifestations, via his Celestial gene.
It’s rather remarkable that, within minutes of discovering the abilities, Star-Lord was able to defeat Ego.
Perhaps that is why Guardians director James Gunn made it so Star-Lord’s powers only worked while Ego was alive. If he still had his powers, Infinity War would probably be a totally different movie right now. Very clever, Mr. Gunn.
Odin
Odin, king of Asgard, took his final breath as he prophesied the return of Hela. But, before his unfortunate passing, Odin was perhaps the most powerful being in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the Odin Force within him, maybe it was a good idea that Taika Waititi decided to give Odin an early road to the grave.
The Asgardian king’s powers would've sure made Thanos’s quest for the Infinity Stones a little more difficult in Infinity War.
The Tesseract was in Asgard’s possession prior to Hela’s arrival.
Interestingly, though, Odin almost faced Thanos in the Infinity Gauntlet comic run by Jim Starlin. Before Odin and the Skyfathers could make a move on the Mad Titan, Thanos trapped them within Asgard with no way of getting out.
Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel has been confirmed to appear in 2019’s Avengers 4, after she makes her MCU debut in her own solo movie that same year. For this reason she probably won’t make an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War.
It could be that she is already too powerful a character to be added to the fold.
Of course, the Avengers will need all the help they can get to defeat Thanos and his Black Order, but with Captain Marvel by their side very early in the game, it’s a pretty done deal Team Thanos wouldn’t make it pass Infinity War.
It was perhaps for this reason that the Russo brothers decided to cut her out of the movie, since according to recent interviews and cast listings, she supposedly was set to make an appearance in the upcoming Avengers film. Carol Danvers may appear, but her superhero alter ego will not.
Grandmaster
Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster was revealed to be a Celestial in Thor: Ragnarok. This alien race are said to be the first to wield the Infinity Stones in the MCU. This would definitely make them some of the most powerful characters in the entire franchise.
We got a taste of their powers in Guardians of the Galaxy, when the Collector, another Celestial, showed the Guardians the alien race’s tremendous abilities. For this reason, it’s unlikely Grandmaster will appear in Infinity War.
The presence of the Celestials would surely bring the action to a quick close.
We experienced Grandmaster’s powers in Thor: Ragnarok. He was able to disintegrate someone with his mysterious staff. What’s rather odd, though, is that his brother, the aforementioned Collector, will likely be easily defeated by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, since he possesses in his collection the Aether (Reality Stone).
Adam Warlock
Long believed to be the final clue to the location of the Soul Stone, Adam Warlock was finally teased in the post-credit scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He was also confirmed by Marvel Studios to not appear in April’s Avengers: Infinity War. Instead, Adam will likely make his formal debut in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Nonetheless, Adam Warlock would most definitely be one of the most powerful characters in Infinity War if he had clinched a spot in the film. Alas, he’s too powerful to make it into the fold.
He was a principal character in the Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War arcs in the comics.
But as powerful as he is in the comics, he might just be more powerful in the MCU. We’ll have to wait until Guardians Vol. 3 to find out.
The Watchers
The Watchers don’t interfere in the happenings of the cosmos; they only observe and preserve the historical record of the universe. This is why in the MCU Stan Lee is supposedly an emissary of the Watchers, as was hilariously shown in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
In the comics, though, when the Watchers do decide to intervene, all hell tends to break loose since they are some of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. One very famous Watcher is, of course, Uatu the Watcher. As far as we know, he’s not in the MCU, but don’t expect any Watchers in Infinity War either.
The film’s abundance of characters can’t guarantee a spot for these cosmic giants, especially since they are so powerful they can be considered gods.
Black Bolt
With the negative reception ABC’s Inhumans got, that alone kicks Black Bolt out of the question of whether he’ll appear in Avengers: Infinity War. Though Marvel’s Inhumans didn’t live up to the hype, Anson Mount’s Black Bolt was perhaps the best part of the entire show.
What made Black Bolt such a unique character was his ability to say many things without speaking a single word. On top of that, his powers almost matched his comic book counterpart’s on the show. In the season one finale, Black Bolt destroyed Attilan by barely speaking.
Imagine if he had yelled, like he did in the Infinity comic arc.
Such powers disqualifies him for the movie event of the year. He is simply just too powerful.
Ultron
Back in Avengers: Age of Ultron, fans believed that Ultron was prophesying Thanos’s arrival on Earth when Scarlet Witch tapped into the robot’s artificial mind and saw Earth’s destruction. In actuality, that was Ultron’s grand plan all along and if it wasn’t for Vision, then such a catastrophe was bound to happen.
Many still believe Ultron is out there somewhere in the MCU, but he won’t be showing his face in Avengers: Infinity War.
That may be because he is never coming back, or it may be because he is simply too powerful to be added to the fold. Thanos and the Black Order already amass incredible power and strength, adding Ultron to the mix would make things a little unfair for Iron Man and the Avengers.
Graviton
Graviton was teased in the episode “The Asset” way back in season one of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Fans speculate that the villain will finally debut in the MCU in this fifth season of S.H.I.E.L.D., but that won’t help him clinch a spot in Avengers: Infinity War.
With the ability to control gravity, he is one of the most powerful, yet obscure Avengers villains in the comics, and maybe that’s why he hasn’t appeared on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. If he’s too powerful to even appear on the aforementioned show, then there’s little to no chance that he’ll make his way into the Avengers sequel. Thanos is already the biggest threat the Avengers have ever faced.
Maybe Graviton would better serve for a future Avengers sequel, or as the main Big Bad to this likely final season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Ghost Rider
If there’s one character from Marvel’s TV realm fans really wanted to see in Infinity War, it’s definitely Ghost Rider. The Robbie Reyes version of the character was a prominent presence on season four of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and was the one to ultimately defeated both of the season’s main villains: Eli Morrow and Aida.
The Rider was virtually unstoppable on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Fans got even more excited when another Ghost Rider was introduced; the one who eventually gave Robbie the Spirit of Vengeance. This was supposedly the comic book fan-favorite Johnny Blaze.
Ghost Rider will not appear in Infinity War for a variety of reasons, but he is also too powerful to be included in an already power-heavy ensemble of characters. Maybe next time, Robbie.
Ego the Living Planet
If you want to make Avengers: Infinity War even more interesting, why not add a living planet who can shapeshift into a variety of things, big and small? Kurt Russell’s Ego the Living Planet was destroyed in last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but right before his defeat he was one of the most powerful beings in the entire MCU.
The father of Star-Lord, Ego was a Celestial and he was only defeated because Star-Lord was himself also a Celestial. Shortly after Ego was destroyed, Star-Lord lost all his Celestial powers.
If Ego was still alive, he would’ve been way too powerful to appear in Avengers: Infinity War.
Though: of Thanos can take and throw a moon out of orbit with just the Space and Power Stone, could he do the same to Ego? Sadly, we’ll never find out.
The Other Celestials
The Celestials are the definition of power in the MCU. Said to be the first wielders of the Infinity Stones, these guys combined would probably make Thanos want two Infinity Gauntlets instead of one (metaphorically speaking, of course).
We saw a classic Celestial in Eson the Searcher when he was depicted in Guardians of the Galaxy. He had the Power Stone in his possesion.
Now, many believe the home world he destroyed in the film was actually Titan, Thanos’s homeland. If such is the case then maybe a Thanos vs. Celestial scenario is one we could be seen in the near future. This is pure speculation, but one thing is for sure, though, we’ll find no Eson or any other classic Celestial in Avengers: Infinity War. Besides the Collector, these guys are just a tad too powerful.
Maybe once Thanos collects all of the Infinity Stones we can see all of the entries on this list enter the fold. By then, the Avengers are going to need all the help they can get.
