Captain America's time in the MCU seems to be over after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Chris Evans has confirmed he has no intention of reprising the role of the iconic character at this moment in time, with Endgame coming a huge nine years after his first outing in Captain America: The First Avenger.

We'll now take a look at 10 people who had an issue with Steve Rogers during his time as the superhero. Starting with his very first enemy...

Red Skull

Captain America Red Skull

Steve Rogers is given the soldier super serum because he's got a heart of gold. With the Americans struggling against the Nazis at the time, he's the one trusted to swing the war their way. However, in Red Skull, he's pitted up against a fierce and deadly enemy - one in possession of the power of the Tesseract.

Red Skull loathes Captain America for his resilience and how he's able to kill and destroy many Nazis and their bases. In the end, he's defeated and banished to Vomir, where he'd later encounter characters such as Thanos, Gamora, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. A fitting punishment for a true fiend...

Chester Phillips

Before Cap gets injected with the serum, Military general Chester Phillips is infuriated by his very presence. He feels Chris Evans' character lacks the skills required to take the fight to the Nazis and relays his concerns to Peggy Carter, who is able to successfully talk him into giving him a chance.

In the end, Chester changes his mind. He gives Cap his full support when he proves himself on the battlefield time and time again and consoles Peggy when the love of her life vanishes following his fight with Red Skull. Chester was played by Tommy Lee Jones, who has been in titles such as The Fugitive, Men in Black, and No Country for Old Men.

Loki

Loki pretending to be Captain America in Thor: The Dark World

Loki is a villain who dislikes most people he encounters. But he seems to have a particularly big issue with Captain America, finding the soldier's inability to ever break or bend the rules intensely irritating.

In Endgame he impersonates Cap shortly after his defeat at the Battle of New York in 2012, asking brother Thor how he can stand to be around somebody so bound to honor. Loki also impersonates Cap in Thor: The Dark World, saying similar things. It's a shame the pair never had an official confrontation, with Steve always surrounded by other heroes when their paths cross.

Arnim Zola

Arnim Zola in a prison cell in Captain America

It isn’t just Red Skull who has a problem with Steve Rogers during the events of Captain America: The First Avenger. Scientist Arnim Zola also dislikes Chris Evans’ character given he, like the Nazi general, is a member of HYDRA.

Zola is long gone by the time Cap wakes up from the ice but still makes a fleeting cameo in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In that cameo, he mocks Steve and insists that while he was successful in stopping their plan all those years ago HYDRA would succeed in the end. What Zola doesn’t foresee, however, is the heroes reigning supreme - which they do at the end of the blockbuster.

Crossbones

Crossbones in Captain America Civil War

There once came a time where Captain America and Brock Rumlow were allies, both capable fighters and acting in the best interests of SHIELD. They become enemies in the Winter Soldier, however, after it emerges that Crossbones is actually a HYDRA agent, one intent on making SHIELD and anybody associated with the organization suffer.

Things come to a head in Captain America: Civil War with the pair facing off in Lagos, Nigeria. Crossbones is ultimately destroyed by Scarlet Witch after she throws him into a building, accidentally killing many civilians in the process.

Baron Zemo

Zemo in Falcon and Winter Soldier

Speaking of Civil War, this list wouldn’t be complete without adding Baron Zemo. The villain appears in that blockbuster full of hate for the Avengers, who had inadvertently played a role in the death of his family years before. And that means that he’s got an issue with Cap, whose friendship with Bucky Barnes he uses and looks to exploit for his own evil means.

Zemo splits the team up, ensuring Cap and Tony Stark fall out in an act that would have big repercussions many years later when Thanos comes to earth. And we’re intrigued to see what happens next, with the character set to return for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier when it comes out later this year.

Ultron

Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

In 2015, the Avengers have to face a deadly new threat in the robotic form of Ultron. He’s created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner with the intention of protecting the world but, upon learning everything possible about planet earth, the cyborg decides to go rogue and attempt to obliterate the planet instead.

Ultron, on more than one occasion, mocks Captain America. He calls him ‘God’s righteous man’ and scoffs at him for ‘trying to live in a world without war’. It’s Steve who gets the last laugh, though, with the Avengers triumphing and Ultron being destroyed by a combination of Scarlet Witch and Vision during the movie’s final stages.

Thanos

Captain America Holds Thanos Hand Gauntlet

Of course, Thanos was always going to make an appearance at some point. While he appears to have a grudging respect for Steve Rogers and the rest of the Avengers during Avengers: Infinity War, he certainly doesn’t feel that way when he faces off against the heroes during the 2019 epic Avengers: Endgame.

Thanos really hates Cap, Thor, and Iron Man in this blockbuster. He tells the pair that they’re ungrateful for him correcting the universe via mass genocide and, unlike in Infinity War, sets out to wipe out ALL life instead. He destroys Steve’s shield in a fight of rage but, in the end, he’s defeated by Tony Stark - who snaps him to dust.

Tony Stark

Iron Man and Captain America square off in their Civil War fight

For the most part in their time in the MCU, Steve Rogers and Tony Stark were both best of friends. They save New York City from Loki in 2012 and team up to take down Ultron three years later. However, in Civil War, they suffer an almighty falling out.

That’s because Tony learns that Steve was fully aware Bucky Barnes murdered his parents many years ago - even if HYDRA had control over his mind at the time. This sparks a huge fight between the trio, one that ends with Steve walking away and leaving his shield behind. It would take years for the pair to reconcile but, fortunately, their reunion leads to Thanos being defeated once and for all.

Bucky Barnes

Bucky Barnes in Captain America The Winter Soldier

Like Tony, Steve’s relationship with Bucky has always been a positive one. They grew up together in Brooklyn and fought Nazis in the war, growing increasingly closer as a result. However, it looks as if their relationship and time together are over when Barnes seemingly falls to his death in Captain America: The First Avenger.

This isn’t the case, however, with HYDRA instead capturing Bucky and turning him into the Winter Soldier. While he goes about assassinating key figures he and Steve come to blows and face off in an epic confrontation. Bucky is full of hate for the man who knows him and it’s only at the end of that movie when he backs down and seeks the truth about his identity. Zemo gets into his head again in Civil War but, luckily, it’s only temporary.
