Captain America is one of the noblest heroes of the MCU who can usually be counted on for anything. However, that was not always the case with the people he spent his time with, as treachery seemed to be a recurring event in the Captain America trilogy.

It was fascinating to see Steve Rogers leave the more black-and-white world of World War II and enter the 21st century to see that things are a little more complicated. With lies and double-crosses all around him, there were even a few instances in which Captain America himself may have betrayed the trust of others.

Tony Grounds Wanda

After putting her villainous past behind her, Wanda Maximoff tries to turn over a new leaf as an Avenger. However, things get off to a rough start when her mistake leads to the death of innocent people in Lagos, which prompts discussions of the Sokovia Accords.

Tony Stark is one of the Avengers who supports this oversight and as a result, he decides to keep Wanda locked in for a while. While it is hardly a torturous experience being confined to the lavish Avengers Compound, it is a step too far for someone who is supposed to be Wanda's teammate.

The Winter Soldier

Winter Soldier has Captain America's shield.

One of the best friendships in the MCU is between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes. So it makes it all the more tragic when these two have to reunite as enemies. After thinking Bucky had been dead for years, Steve sees his friend return as the cold-blooded assassin, the Winter Soldier.

Calling this a betrayal might not be totally fair as it implies Bucky had some say in the matter when he was in fact brainwashed. However, for Steve to suddenly have his best friend trying to kill him, it would be hard not to feel at least a bit betrayed.

Wanda Attacks Vision

The unexpected and tragic romance of Wanda and Vision really starts to form in Captain America: Civil War. Though these two find themselves on opposite sides of the Sokovia Accords debate, they clearly care a lot about each other, and Vision attempts to keep Wanda safe, even through confinement.

Despite their connection, once Hawkeye arrives to recruit Wanda to Cap's team, their relationship becomes more complicated. Though it is understandable that Wanda would want to free herself, manipulating the Mind Stone to send Vision crashing through the Earth seems like a bit much.

Zola Turns In Red Skull

Toby Jones as Arnim Zola in Captain America The First Avenger

Arnim Zola is the genius scientist working alongside Red Skull during World War II to build his Hydra army. While Zola is a very big part of this plan, it is clear he doesn't have the stomach for war.

After being captured by the Howling Commandos, Zola is interrogated. In exchange for his freedom, Zola tells the United States military where Red Skull's secret lair is which allows the heroes to raid it and stop him from taking over the world. Though done out of cowardice, Zola actually helps to save the day.

Natasha Switches Sides

Given her distrust of the government, it is a little surprising that Natasha Romanoff was one of the Avengers who supported the Sokovia Accords. However, given the fact that she is also a super spy, it is not surprising that she is the only one to switch sides during the fight.

After fighting as part of Iron Man's team, Natasha seems to realize the chaos this fight is causing and that Steve will not back down. As a result, she turns on T'Challa, incapacitating him so Steve and Bucky can get away.

Rumlow Attacks Steve

Brock Rumlow is first introduced as a member of the STRIKE team who backs up Captain America on his missions. He even saves Cap from an enemy during the opening rescue mission in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

But after the apparent death of Nick Fury, the STRIKE team turns on Cap, revealing that they are all Hydra agents. Coming from the days of WWII, it is a strange concept to Steve that he can no longer trust the people he is fighting alongside.

Steve Didn't Tell Tony

Steve Rogers is always the guy who can be counted on to do the right thing, so it's interesting to see him in a position where the right thing is not so clear. When Tony finds out that it was Bucky who killed his parents years ago, he asks Steve if he knew and he confirms that he did, leading to a devastating rift between them that ends the Avengers.

In Steve's defense, he thought that keeping the truth from Tony was sparing him more pain. But Steve also admits that he partially did it for himself. While Tony's response may have been too much, it is easy to see why he felt so betrayed.

Steve Kisses Sharon

Though some fans expected Steve to die in Avengers: Endgame, the happy ending he gets with Peggy Carter feels very appropriate. But that also makes the ill-advised romance between Steve and Sharon feel all the more wrong.

Just days after learning about the death of his true love, Peggy, Steve decides to totally betray her memory by kissing her niece, Sharon. It is such a strange moment of Steve Rogers doing something that is so obviously wrong.

Pierce Tries To Kill Fury

Nick Fury doesn't seem like the kind of person who has a lot of close friends, but it is clear that he and Alexander Pierce go back a long way. Pierce genuinely admires Fury, which also means that he sees him as a threat to his plans for Hydra.

Pierce orders the assassination of Fury when he starts searching for the truth and when Fury returns from the apparent grave, Pierce is completely unapologetic about trying to kill his oldest friend.

Zola Rebuilds Hydra

After helping the United States take down Red Skull, Zola is offered a job with the government, helping to build the new spy organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. However, Zola proves that, despite his help with Red Skull, he is still the villain.

While helping build the new organization, Zola secretly begins rebuilding Hydra within S.H.I.E.L.D. He has it infiltrate every corner of power so that it can one day return and take over the world.
