Though she might not be the first character to spring to fans’ minds, Gamora is one of the most important heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She’s the last of her species, she’s Thanos’ daughter, and she’s the reason why Thanos obtains the Soul Stone. And with all of that power and rich history, Redditors have typically cast a critical eye on Gamora.

From being a weak love interest, to not being as heroic as she is in the comics, to having her backstory rushed, Reddit users have a ton of unpopular negative opinions about the Guardian. And there are others who run to her defense when it comes to common criticisms of her too.

She Deserved To Die

Reddit user offspeedstuff is over the moon that Gamora died in Avengers: Infinity War. They go even further to say that “she shouldn’t come back.” However, much to the Redditor’s dismay, even though she’s dead, she of course returned from a different timeline, and the Redditor is one of the few who isn’t excited.

Gamora has so much potential for the future of the MCU, and especially in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as she could become the warrior that she is in the comics. And there’s much more of a chance to shine and expand on the relationship between her and Nebula too.

Her Relationship With Thanos Was Rushed

Thanos takes young Gamora.

As Gamora is the daughter of Thanos, it made for one of the most complex character arcs in the MCU. But Redditor GabrielStrange thinks it was a missed opportunity, as they claim that Gamora’s death was “unilateral.”

They compare the Gamora and Thanos’ story arc to Tony Stark’s daddy issues in Iron Man 2, and Hope’s relationship with her father in Ant-Man, as there was a considerable amount of time spent on those in the movies. But there was a whole sequence dedicated to Gamora meeting Thanos for the first time and growing up with him in Infinity War, and it’s one of the times that fans felt bad for Gamora. And every time they meet thereafter is so impactful because of it.

She Should Have Been The Emotional Cornerstone Of Guardians Vol. 1

Alianov believes that the first Guardians movie did a “ridiculously weak job” when it came to Gamora, as she should have been the emotional cornerstone of the movie. But Gunn, Kevin Feige, and the MCU have always been playing the long game, and Guardians Vol. 1 is simply where her story began.

She might not have been the cornerstone of the movie, but it did lay the foundation of her movies-long character arc. And in the end, she was the emotional cornerstone of Avengers: Infinity War, which was even more satisfying than anything that could have been changed about her in Vol. 1.

Gamora Is Like An Annoying Girlfriend

Whilst arguing that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is "cringey," SuperiorThor90 says that Gamora is like an annoying girlfriend who “wants to go out for dinner but won’t decide where." But it sounds like the Redditor is projecting their real-life experiences on to the MCU character, as Gamora is far from it.

Though the Reddit user is essentially claiming that Gamora whines too much, it comes off more like a natural progression of a relationship that’s two years deep. And, there’s two sides to everything, as Peter is just as much of a man child, but despite that, Gamora is still there for him when he’s going through all of his daddy issues.

The Scene In Knowhere In Infinity War Is Laughable

Gamora tries to stab Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War

Seemingly taking aim at Zoe Saldana’s acting skills, Reddit user SuperRider108_MC believes that the scene between Gamora and Thanos in Inifinity War was laughable. They state that the scene that takes place on Knowhere had them “cracking up.”

However, though there were a lot of different actors considered to play Gamora, Marvel Studios couldn’t have made a better choice, as Saldana plays the character brilliantly, and the scene on Knowhere is no exception. When Gamora breaks down after she thinks she has murdered Thanos, it’s the most emotional moment in the movie.

There Should Have Been A Gamora/Nebula Movie Instead Of Black Widow

Black Widow in a field at the end of the movie.

ThnderGunExprs thinks that instead of developing Black Widow, Marvel Studios should have made a movie with Gamora and Nebula as the leads instead. The Redditor argues that Black Widow has “had so much screen time” that fans don’t need to see her story.

But though Gamora and Nebula had the best sibling rivalry in the MCU and a movie about the odd-couple would be fun, Black Widow has deserved her own movie for years. The new movie was a huge success, introduced a new Black Widow, and welcomed the Red Guardian, one of the best supporting characters in the whole of the MCU. And though some might argue that Black Widow was unnecessary and inconsequential, so could a Gamora and Nebula team-up movie be.

Nebula Is More Interesting Than Gamora

As Gamora’s narrative had built and built over the past few years - even including her backstory about her she was just a child - few other characters are as interesting. But Redditor DrDreidel82 takes aim at the character’s personality, as they call Gamora “two dimensional.”

They go on to make a good argument by saying that she didn’t go through the same pain as Nebula because Gamora was Thanos’ favorite, which made Nebula more interesting. But out of the two of them, if one of them is two-dimensional, it’s Nebula, as she only has one emotion; anger. However, Gamora has had to deal with her traumatic past too, but she’s still able to crack jokes, even if the Redditor doesn’t find them funny.

James Gunn Turned Gamora Into A Weak Love Interest

Clearly a fan of the comic books, Redditor Elementium had strong words to say about Gamora right after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. While arguing that he shouldn’t make any more MCU movies, the user says that the director turned Gamora into a “weak love interest,” whereas in the comic books she’s a total badass.

Though Gamora did quickly fall for Peter Quill’s charm, she was by no means weak, and there were clear signs that she was as powerful and heroic as the rest of the Guardians. Not only that, but Gamora would beat Star-Lord in a fight, and she lived up to her name of deadliest assassin in the galaxy.

Peter And Gamora Are The Best Romantic Couple

This Reddit user is a huge fanatic of the Guardians series, as AyyItsMidnight goes on to profess their love for the franchise by expressing that they like everything that most fans criticize it for.

In what is the complete other end of the spectrum to Gamora being a weak love interest, they go on to state that Peter and Gamora are their “favorite romantic pairing” in the series. But that’s one of the biggest issues fans have with the Guardians movies, as most think that Peter would have been better without Gamora. Hypothetically, there are many other characters in the MCU that Peter would be better with, including Wanda or even Mantis.

Gamora’s Death Is Terrible

Wombat_H goes on a tirade about all of the hot takes in the MCU, and one of the most controversial is that Gamora’s death is “terrible.” The user groups the character with Black Widow as two of the worst deaths in the series, which is a whole other unpopular opinion in itself.

But, unlike so many deaths in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gamora’s actually meant something, and it was one of Thanos’ most memorable moments too. But more than anything, if her death had never happened, fans would never have gotten so many hilarious memes about Gamora.
