The Rick and Morty-inspired Szechuan sauce promotion didn't go as planned on Saturday with many fans missing out, but McDonald's is taking steps to restock its suddenly very important sauce soon. McDonald's Szechuan sauce, originally created to promote the Disney movie Mulan gained new popularity thanks to Rick & Morty. The fast food giant ran with the joke, sending co-creator Justin Roiland a huge bottle of the sauce and later promising that it would return to "this dimension" on October 7, 2017. The event concluded with massive lines and select retailers not having nearly enough sauce on hand to meet demand. In a truly shocking turn of events, angry fans expressed their displeasure to Twitter and McDonald's released the following statement promising more sauce soon.

The sauce first appeared in the Rick & Morty season 3 premiere that aired as part of an April Fool's Day stunt on earlier this year. Rick admits to have developed an obsession over it and vows that "in 9 seasons or 97 years I'll receive more Szechuan sauce."

The mention went viral and soon McDonald's found a way to capitalize on the notoriety of a sauce it hasn't made available in years. Unfortunately, the opportunity didn't turn out like the higher ups at the Golden Arches likely hoped. Stories and video of long lines and insufficient inventories quickly began to surface along with fans angrily voicing their displeasure to the fast food giant. McDonald's, for its part, plans to rectify the issue by making sure the sauce is more widely available and in greater quantities later this year.

You spoke. We’ve listened. Lots more #SzechuanSauce and locations. Details soon. And that’s the wayyy the news goes! pic.twitter.com/ooIrbZBsOw— McDonald's (@McDonalds) October 8, 2017

The statement, made on the McDonalds official Twitter, promises that the company is willing to do "whatever it takes" to bring the sauce back to its customers. The chain further promises that the sauce will be available at any McDonald's for a longer time and with a far more substantial supply. While many fans shared stories of driving across state lines to get a sample of the now famous dipping sauce, hopefully they won't have to go farther than their neighborhood eatery when the sauce is released again.

Eager Rick & Morty (and fast food) fans should stay tuned to McDonald's social media pages such as Twitter and Facebook for updates about when the sauce will return to this dimension.
