Encanto isn't afraid to break boundaries in the slightest. From its lack of a "proper" Disney villain to exploring familial trauma, the movie goes against the Disney mold to deliver a deeply compelling and heartfelt story about belonging and expectation. Part of what makes the film work so well is all the different personality types within the movie.

The Madrigal family may have diverse gifts, but it really comes down to who they are that truly makes them unique. As a result, it is both useful and necessary to understand their complexity by using the system provided by Meyers-Briggs®.

Mirabel - ESFJ

Mirabel looks down on some children in Disney's Encanto.

Mirabel is sure to be seen as one of Stephanie Beatriz’s best roles, and she gets some of the best songs in the movie. She also exhibits many of the traits that are commonly associated with the ESFJ personality type, particularly that type's desire to be seen, understood, and appreciated for what they bring to the table and for their particular talents.

What’s more, she also does everything that she can to establish harmony in the Madrigal household, especially once chaos begins to unfold.

Abuela Alma - ISTJ

Disney is full of motherly figures, and Abuela Alma is sure to join those. Though she isn’t a villain, per se, she is remarkably inflexible in some important ways. As a result, she tends to take a rather hostile approach to Mirabel (particularly given that the latter lacks her magical gift).

She has a very practical approach to life and to her home, which means that she is very much an ISTJ. Just as importantly, she also places a lot of emphasis on family traditions and loyalty, even when doing so means that she sometimes denigrates the family itself.

Bruno - ENTJ

Mirabel & Bruno stare at something offscreen in Disney's Encanto.

Bruno is one of the most likable characters in the movie, given that he is an outcast and largely ignored by almost everyone. In part, however, this stems from his ability to see the future and, just as importantly, his willingness to tell everyone what he has seen.

He is thus very similar to other ENTJ personality types, which are primarily known for being willing to tell other people what they see and how they feel, regardless of the consequences that this might involve.

Antonio Madrigal - ENFJ

Antonio holds a bird as he rises a tiger in Disney's Encanto.

Every member of the Madrigal family has their magical gift, and Antonio ends up being able to talk to animals.

Given that, by the time that he gets his gift he has already shown himself to be a deeply sensitive and empathetic person, it makes a lot of sense that he would fit within the parameters of the ENFJ personality type. They are usually characterized by a sensitivity to the feelings of others. In particular, Antonio shows that he appreciates Mirabel for who she is rather than who he wants her to be.

Julieta Madrigal - ENFJ

Julieta and Mirabel touch heads and hands in Disney's Encanto.

Julieta also joins the ranks of the many famous mothers that are part of the Disney canon and, like all of the best moms, she has an innate ability to heal others, particularly with her cooking. It’s a valuable skill, of course, and it’s very much of a piece with her personality as an ENFJ.

Given that she recognizes how anxious Mirabel is at not having the same magical gifts as the rest of the family, she always sees her daughter’s potential even when others refuse to do so.

Luisa Madrigal - ESTP

Luisa holds a rock over her head in Disney's Encanto.

There are many formidably strong Disney characters, but by this point, it’s clear that Luisa will be seen as one of the strongest and most powerful. However, there is more to her than just muscles, and she cares deeply about her family. Luisa wants to do everything that she can to help and protect them. At the same time, she also shows many of the traits of the ESTP.

In particular, she is the type of person that will always leap into a problem in the search of a solution rather than spending too much time thinking about it.

Pepa Madrigal - INFP

Of all of the members of the Madrigal family, Pepa is arguably one of the most emotional, which can be a bit of a problem, given that she can control the weather.

She is also very insistent that the world that she inhabits matches what she believes it should look like, which means that she is thoroughly aligned with the INFP. This is a personality type that is marked by a particularly responsive attitude, particularly when they feel threatened.

Isabela Madrigal - ESFP

In some ways, Isabela is more of a stereotypical Disney princess character than her sister, and she has the power to create flowers. She sharply feels the burden of being perfect all the time, but she also has many of the traits of the ESFP.

In particular, she is the type of person that wants to be surrounded by material comforts. Though she has a difficult relationship with her sister at first, she quickly shows the ESFP’s ability to mesh well with others.

Dolores Madrigal - ENFP

Like the other members of her family, Dolores has a special gift, in her case the ability to hear everything with uncanny detail. She is a rather spontaneous person, and she quickly develops feelings for the man that is supposed to be marrying her cousin.

Though she doesn’t express her feelings for him right away, she nevertheless craves his affirmation and love. This means that she is very much an ENFP, which is the personality type that is most in need of support from others.

Camilo Madrigal - ISTP

By the time that the movie begins, Camilo, like Mirabel, is still very much a character in flux, trying to figure out just who he is and what he wants. At the same time, his ability to shapeshift into other people–there’s almost no one that he cannot turn into–also means that he has a pretty deep understanding of others and what makes them work.

That being the case, he is the member of the family that most aligns with the personality type of the ISTP.
