Netflix's After Life is an existential comedy series starring, written, and directed by British comedian Ricky Gervais. Gervais plays Tony Johnson, a correspondent for a local newspaper who grieves the loss of his wife. After his wife’s demise, he takes a cynical look at life and feels that it’s his right and ‘superpower’ to spoil the mood of everyone in his life. The show combats several philosophical and psychological mindsets through its characters and their interactions with the lead character.

Here we try analyzing the personality types of these characters according to the Miggs-Bryer system.

Tony Johnson- ISTJ

ESTJ personalities are sometimes called supervisor personalities for how they tend to take charge and show their dominance on most occasions. The protagonist of the show, Tony, is surely a strict supervisor but the ‘E’ in his personality is replaced with ‘I’.

He’s extroverted in the sense that he can talk rudely and bluntly to anyone without any fears of others judging him. But deep down, he’s an introvert as he just wants to be left alone. His friends try taking him to new places and making him new people but he just manages to have pessimistic conversations with them, making it evident that he has lost all hope in humanity. He wants the concrete truths of life and shies away from perceiving any feelings or abstract notions like love and happiness. For this reason, Tony has this smug, deadpan humor going on in his demeanor most of the time.

Kath- EIFP

Kath is an advertising employee at the newspaper. She’s loud-mouthed, opinionated and a quite sensitive person. Her extroversions can be implied through her constant judgments on everyone in the office (especially Tony).

Further, we know that Kath relies on intuitions rather than senses because of how emotional and defensive she can get when her personality gets questioned. For instance, once Tony questions her belief in God. Kath says that somebody indeed might have created this world and we should believe this somebody. Tony just smugly replied to her saying that if this is the case, then who created God. Kath has no answer to this and gets disappointed.

Matt- INFP

Tony’s brother-in-law and editor of the Tambury Gazette is opposite of Tony in terms of personality. Matt considers himself to be a journalist but isn’t exactly the talkative type, and while his life does have its fair share of sad moments, he still nurtures optimistic thoughts in his mind.

He’s more emotional than rational and more imaginative than particular. While Tony wouldn’t believe anything at face value, Matt is one person who will just be content enough to believe whatever is around him. This makes him one of the kindest characters in After Life.

Lenny- ESTJ

Lenny looking annoyed in After Life

Believe it or not but Lenny and Tony have almost the same personality type even though they are poles apart on face value. The photographer for the gazette doesn’t have many questions and thinks out matters according to his simplistic notions. He has a judging aspect rather than perceiving because he likes to check things off his to-do lists and stick to his plans, rather than bothering to tell the whole world about it and leave matters open. It might sound like a stretch but then Lenny also has a limited daily schedule; all he does is click photos and eat.

People might fun of his eating and general foolishness but he has no social anxieties. His nature as an extrovert is very evident from the one time when he and Tony went on an assignment at a lady’s house, and Lenny ended up asking her out and then dating her.

Sandy- ENFP

Sandy in After Life smiling at the camera.

A fresh face in the newspaper, this writer isn’t afraid of smiling and making new friends (even if it might lead to embarrassing experiences at times). The embarrassing experiences which expose her amateur behavior can also affect her emotionally which emphasizes that she’s a feeler rather than a thinker.

She thinks that her writing and overall nature can lighten up people, even a Stoic like Tony. She clearly follows her heart more than her head. Neither is she the judging type as she doesn’t just follow her plans and get done with it. Sandy wants others to get involved with her in her work and life too and is the type who can mix work and play. But considering that Sandy is learning new life lessons from diverse characters like Tony and Matt, her personality might go through a few changes in the next season.

Lisa Johnson- ENFP

Exactly similar to Sandy, Tony’s late wife Lisa too was a carefree spirit who valued the social and emotional connections she shared with people. The viewers mostly get glimpses of Kerry through the videotapes which she leaves for Tony while battling cancer. And we can see that she tries to stay positive even in the darkest times of her life.

The charming and independent people who fall in the ENFP category have also been found to influence the people around him. And surely Lisa left a huge influence on Tony; the reason why he can’t absolutely move on over her since her death. Even though Tony becomes the morbid protagonist of this show, he still smiles a little when he replays Lisa’s videos.

The Psychiatrist- ESTP

It’s a slippery slope analyzing Tony’s psychiatrist himself, as judging personalities is more of his domain. As we know more of his professional side rather than his actual personality, he falls under the ESTP category. This means that he’s often rational, practical and perceptive.

Even though he tries to offer Tony empathy, he also doesn’t back away from being a little strict with his patient. In some cases, he even loses his cool and asks Tony to stop his whining and cynicism if he really needs to move on in the remainder of his life. Dropping truth bombs and revealing reality checks expose his boldness, another characteristic trait found in ESTP personalities.

Ray Johnson- INFP

Owing to his old age and dementia, Tony’s dad Ray is definitely an introvert who is content living within the four walls of his hospital. He is in that stage of life where he doesn’t care about the technicalities of life and relationships. He does whatever he feels which might culminate into some inappropriate moments too, like the time when he ended up spanking his nurse.

Ray might be as damaged as Tony but the only difference is that he doesn’t realize his pain and hence doesn’t feel gloomy about it. He’s basically an escapist avatar of Tony.

Anne- ENFP

Anne talking to Tony in After Life

Anne is a lady whom Tony encounters in the graveyard. She too has lost her significant other like our protagonist, but she’s more hopeful of the future. She lives in grief but is still helpful and positive towards others. The ENFP personality type usually includes warm and compassionate people like Anne.

Anne is one of the most helpful acquaintances of Tony as she understands what he is going through. Instead of starting with bitter truths and a slight annoyance at Tony’s negative attitude, she keeps her calm and understands him through some smooth communication skills.

Daphne- ESFJ

Daphne aka Roxy is a sex worker who meets Tony through a chance encounter with a drug dealer. She and Tony seem to hit off on a bittersweet note, ranting about their issues to each other. She might probably end up getting more scenes in the next season, considering the outgoing nature and likability of the character.

The ESFJ type suits Daphne as she seems to show a sense of empathy and a warm, stabilizing presence in general. People who fall under this category are understanding and don’t back away from the slightest inconveniences. When most of Tony’s peers grow fearful of his taunts, and sarcasm, Daphne tries to understand him with patience.
