Adventure Time is one of the most popular Cartoon Network shows of all time. It introduced viewers to some of the most lively and unique characters ever seen on the network. For the most part, it follows Finn The Human and Jake The Dog as they traverse the complicated land of Ooo, filled with candy citizens, Ice Kings, princesses galore, and some of the best storytelling ever seen in just brief ten-minute increments.

Now that the series finale is long over with, now is a good time to look back at some of Ooo's vibrant personality types and form a better understanding of what drives the show's main characters. The Myers-Briggs® personality test is a great way to do this.

Peppermint Butler: The Logistician - ISTJ

Peppermint Butler Turning Demonic on Adventure Time

There’s a reason that Peppermint Butler is Princess Bubblegum’s right-hand mint. And it has nothing to do with his breath-saving exterior. Maybe it has a little to do with that. Who knows? Beneath his minty fresh exterior, however, Peppermint Butler is the master of all the moving pieces in the Candy Kingdom.

Peppermint Butler is creating all the invisible systems that make the Candy Kingdom a functional society. If there’s something going wrong in the Candy Kingdom, whether it’s saving Finn and Jake from Death itself (for just the price of their flesh from their sleeping bodies) or being the go-to mint for when the vampires get out of control, Pep-but is the mint with the plan.

Ice King: The Idealist - INFP

The Ice King is very unpredictable. He’s unstructured to a fault. His plotting and scheming rarely amount to much of anything even before Finn and Jake get involved. One of his defining characteristics is an endless obsession with finding his happiness and finding a princess to share that happiness with. The corruption of certain aspects of his personality due to wearing the Ice crown for much too long has led to a decay of his character.

While INFPs are normally idealistic and creative people constantly striving for harmony in their lives and the world as a whole, the Ice King’s moral and psychological decay has led to a much more insecure and impractical personality.

BMO: The Mediator - INFP

BMO in Adventure Time

On the other end of the INFP scale, there's BMO. Having the benefit of not being under the control of the Ice King's crown for an extended period of time, BMO is a much healthier version of the INFP personality type. BMO is deeply empathetic and caring to those around him. There’s very little that BMO wouldn’t do to help out Finn, Jake, or anyone of his friends.

BMO has many friends, but “BMO does weird junk when no one is around”. BMO is dependable, optimistic, brave, and always ready to fight for a friend in need.

Prismo: The Protagonist - ENFJ

Prismo in Adventure Time

A granter of wishes, master of the time room, and two-dimensional being of his own dreams, Prismo is always willing to help out a friend when they need it. He’s there to explain the possible consequences of any wish to Jake, he’s always ready for a good time with his friends in the time room, and he’s even willing to sacrifice himself if it means that he can help out Finn and Jake along their way.

For a being with near-omnipotence, he is incredibly caring. While most beings at his power level would find the plans of mortals far beneath them, Prismo is often shown to be endlessly patient and caring to the mortals fans see him interacting with.

Gunter/Orgalorg The Breaker Of Worlds: The Virtuoso - ISTP

Gunter wearing the Ice King's crown in Adventure Time

Gunter is a cold, sensible, and logical penguin of the land of Ooo. While at first glance he may seem like just a simple penguin, beneath his adorable exterior lurks a dark secret, a hidden deity, Orgalorg: The Breaker Of Worlds. Gunter is friendly but reserved, calm, but spontaneous. He has a natural affinity for logic and is excellent at working with and mastering new tools.

Gunter also has very little regard for property in general. He has no problem breaking, stealing, or damaging just about anything he can get his hands on. However, there’s much more going on under the surface with this penguin.

Lumpy Space Princess: The Campaigner - ENFP

Lumpy Space Princess has an innate sense of curiosity that seems to get her in more trouble than any of her other traits. She’s easily overwhelmed, highly emotional, popular, and a great friend to the other princesses (that can actually stand being around her). LSP is naturally a confident and sassy Lumpy Space person. She’s constantly putting herself above everyone else and looking for petty drama to fill her Lumpy Spacetime.

LSP doesn’t have much of a moral code but instead seeks out instant gratification wherever she can get it. Like many ENFPs, LSP has a major problem planning for the long term and is much more likely to sacrifice the long game in order to achieve a quick victory.

Marceline The Vampire Queen: The Adventurer - ISFP

Marceline playing bass

Marceline is the charming, passionate, vampire hunting, thousand-year-old musician from the Nightosphere. Marci is empathetic and caring, courageous and artistic. She’s also readily available whenever there are vampires that need hunting or demon lords that need expelling.

Marci may be the vampire queen to call when in dire need of saving, but she’s also the vampire to call when a fun friend is needed. She also loves pranking the citizens of Ooo, whether it’s a couple of rabid wolves in the bedroom late at night or a fake vampire-turning ritual, Marceline knows how to make a good time out of nothing.

Princess Bubblegum: The Commander - ENTJ

For the most part, Princess Bubblegum is a kind, caring, and thoughtful candy princess. She is inventive, structured, and most likely the most organized person in all of Ooo. There is very little Princess Bubblegum won’t do for the citizens of the Candy Kingdom. While this is typically a good thing, it can lead her into the darker aspects of her personality.

There is a cold and ruthless aspect to her personality which can lead her to do things like end her relationship with Marceline because she’s too overwhelmed with her duties as Princess and not able to properly handle her emotions.

Jake The Dog: The Logician - INTP

Jake in front of a dazzling background in Adventure Time.

Jake The Dog, best friend and surrogate father figure to Finn The Human, has an intense sense of what is right and wrong as he displays over and over again while guiding Finn through his complicated journey through life. As a Logician, Jake is laid-back, and rather than pestering Finn through his tough decisions and showing him where he’s going wrong at every turn, Jake tends to allow Finn to go down his own path, teaching him instead to understand why something is wrong or right.

One of the reasons Jake makes such a good mentor to Finn is because of his experience with the world on both sides of the law. He often gives Finn exactly the information he needs to move forward and then sits back, allowing Finn to take the wheel and grow from there.

Finn The Human: The Entertainer - ESFP

Finn from Adventure Time

Finn the Human is always looking for his next adventure. He has a strong sense of what is right and wrong and stops at nothing to pursue these ideals and correct the course of anyone not living in alignment with what he feels is right. Finn has excellent people skills and has many deep and meaningful relationships with the citizens of the land of Ooo. He is bold, courageous, selfless, and always ready to lend a helping hand to a good cause.

Finn is all but incapable of perpetrating any acts of villainy or viciousness, but he can be impulsive and aggressive at times. That being said, there’s a reason Finn is the first human to get the call when trouble is brewing. And it’s not just because he’s the only one around.
