Sons of Anarchy spinoff Mayans MC has been picked up to series by FX. The news comes several months after the series pilot was reshot and recast, with Norberto Barba taking over directing duties from series co-creator Kurt Sutter. In August, FX chief John Landgraf expressed confidence that Mayans MC would eventually make it to the network despite its issues. Indeed, FX will now go ahead with a spinoff of one of their most popular series.

The original Sons of Anarchy, a crime drama created by Kurt Sutter, ran for seven seasons on FX. Charlie Hunnam starred as Jax Teller, a leader of the SAMCRO motorcycle gang. Acting as the show's moral center, Jax developed a Hamlet-like sense of conflict about the gang's violent activities. Katey Sagal played Jax's hardcore mom Gemma, and Ron Perlman played her lover and Jax's rival Clay. Initially enemies of SAMCRO, the Mayans motorcycle gang eventually became their allies and business partners. Though on Sons of Anarchy, the concept of loyalty always remained a bit shaky.

FX Networks has now announced that Sons of Anarchy spinoff Mayans MC will receive a series pick-up. The new series' first season will run for ten episodes. Pilot episode director Noberto Barba will executive produce along with Kurt Sutter. Series co-creator Elgin James serves as co-executive producer.

Set after the death of Jax Teller in the finale of Sons of Anarchy, Mayans MC stars JD Pardo as EZ Reyes, a new Mayans prospect just out of prison. Once a golden boy in his California-Mexico border town, EZ now must establish his outlaw identity and prove himself worthy of riding with the Mayans. Battlestar Galactica's Edward James Olmos also stars along with Sarah Bolger, Clayton Cardenas, Richard Cabral, Michael Irby, Raoul Trujillo, Antonio Jaramillo and Carla Baratta.

Like Jax in Sons of Anarchy, EZ sounds like he has the role of the complex hero whose sense of moral conflict becomes the audience's window on the show's world. Kurt Sutter did a fine job, at least in the early seasons of Sons, building out the show's world and exploring the complicated dynamic between its characters. And he did all that while still providing rip-roaring outlaw biker action. The series seemed to run out of steam as it went on however, becoming more of a glorified soap opera. Sutter's Shakespearian overtones perhaps became a bit heavy-handed at times, and story-wise the series became perhaps a bit repetitive.

Sutter now gets a chance to start over with Mayans MC. The show debuts on FX in 2018.
