Mayans MC has been renewed for season 3 at FX. A spinoff of Sons of Anarchy, the show has gone through a lot of changes behind the scenes in recent months. In August, co-creator Kurt Sutter announced his plans to step away from the show. In October, Sutter was fired from FX due to what was described as a series of complaints about his behavior. Although both decisions aren’t without controversy, the renewal is a clear indication that Mayans MC is ready to move forward into a new era.

Premiering in 2018, the show was a continuation of Sons of Anarchy. Taking place two and a half years after the events of the original series, the biker drama focused on the Mayans Motorcycle Club. It has featured guest appearances from Katey Sagal and Robert Patrick, both of whom played prominent characters in Sons of Anarchy, but the spinoff also carved its own path by zeroing in on questions of isolation and immigration. It has also tackled hot button issues, like Trump’s Border Wall. The renewal of Mayans MC has been anticipated among fans, with some wondering about whether the off-screen conflict might affect the show, but that hasn’t proved to be the case. Mayans MC season 3 has been confirmed to return in 2020, with the network boasting about the show’s success in the ratings.

As announced by FX, Mayans MC season 3 will premiere in the fall of 2020. Elgin James, who Sutter chose as his successor in August, will be taking over as showrunner. In 2018, the spinoff was cable’s most watched new show in the coveted demographic of adults between the ages of 18 and 49. In general, Mayans MC has averaged 4.6 million viewers per episode. Given those numbers, it would make sense that FX would want to continue the show in spite of the tensions off camera.

Sutter’s dismissal from the show did not occur smoothly. Though he openly acknowledged his own mistakes, Sutter also claimed that he’d been encountering pressure and influence to alter the way that Mayans MC was presented. These included, in Sutter’s description, notes on his scripts and heavy-handed edits as well as instances where the story had to be dumbed down.

Regardless of the truth of those allegations, the spinoff is now moving ahead with a third installment. Sons of Anarchy ran for seven seasons, helping to make its cast familiar faces and launching the career of Charlie Hunnam as a leading man. Mayans MC could have a similar legacy to the original series, if it continues to be a hit.
