Mayans MC is FX's Sons of Anarchy spinoff series. The Mayan Motorcycle Club that was introduced in the original series will be the focus of the new show, which will take place in a location completely separate of the Sons in the border zone between California and Mexico. The show will build on themes that have already been introduced and expand the mythology of the club from what fans have previously seen.
Edward James Olmos and John Ortiz will lead the cast of Mayans MC bringing some much needed gravitas to the show. Last week JD Pardo was cast as the lead character EZ who will fill the same role that Jax (Charlie Hunnam) did previously.
Now The Wrap is reporting that American Crime star Richard Cabral will also be joining the cast of Mayans MC. Cabral will be playing Johnny "El Coco" Cruz, who is a full patch member of Mayans MC, Santo Padre. Once an army sharpshooter, he was discharged after shooting a cigar out of the mouth of his superior officer from a half mile away. Cabral, himself, turned from a life of crime to pursue acting and is sure to bring important realism to the show.
Not only does Cabral join Olmas, Ortiz and Pardo, but Antonio Jaramillo (Shades of Blue) and Clayton Cardenas who also worked on American Crime. Its unclear whether their two characters will have a strong relationship at this point, but the fact that Cabral and Cardenas have worked together in the past means that they could bring a strong chemistry to the set of Mayans MC if they are given scenes together.
The truth that Cabral could potentially bring to Johnny Cruz could make for some amazing television. If he is able to humanize a character that most of the audience may not be able to easily identify with he has the potential to be a breakout. On top of that, Cabral has proved that he can handle the demands of a show dealing heavily with criminality. Hopefully, this will allow him to slip easily into Mayans MC.
On the other hand, the character description focuses a lot on his former military experience. This would seem to indicate the potential for getting into scraps with other characters. It could also make him an valuable asset if he is as good a sniper as fans are being led to believe. There's a chance Cabral may be playing the most integral piece in the puzzle that will be unfolding over the course of the first season.
Screen Rant will keep you updated on any new Mayans MC developments.
