Season 2 Mayans M.C. is getting closer, and FX has just released a first-look trailer filled with all kinds of action, backstabbing, and secret plots the series and its predecessor, Sons of Anarchy, have come to be known for. The spinoff to one of FX’s biggest hits has managed to  secure a fan base all its own, despite taking place in a Jax Teller-less world, and one removed  from the antics of SAMCRO and its unofficial members.

The series focuses on a Southern California charter of the Mayans, and one of the club’s newest members, Ezekiel ‘EZ’ Reyes (JD Pardo), a former “golden boy” turned ex-con who’s looking for a new start alongside his brother, Angel (Clayton Cardenas), in the MC. Things aren’t exactly as they appear, however, as EZ is also working with law enforcement in conjunction with his father, Felipe (Edward James Olmos), in an effort to sniff out the club’s illegal dealings and association with cartel leader Miguel Galindo. It’s a familiarly complicated narrative that’s primed for as many twists and turns as its predecessor dished out on an episode-to-episode basis.

And while Mayans M.C. hasn’t quite attracted the same sizable audience SOA did, the series’ second season may change all of that, at least if they first trailer for season 2 is any indication. From the look of things, the series’ theme of loyalty, trust, and brotherhood will be put to the test as EZ seemingly doubles down on his commitment to his family — both those in the club and those he’s related to by blood. It would seem as though the new season is headed toward a collision between the Mayans, law enforcement, and the Galindo Cartel, as their respective circumstances heat up. The build-up to that confrontation will no doubt be one to remember, as the franchise has never shied away from depicting the sort of violent fallout that typically results from such conflict. The only question now is: who will be left standing when the dust settles?

Far be it for anyone to try and predict who won’t be around for Mayans M.C. (if there will be such a thing), but given the franchise’s history, it’s a good bet the cast will look at least a little different. For now, though, fans can enjoy the new trailer as they wait for season 2 to premiere at the beginning of September.
