Matt Damon Thought Thor: Ragnarok Cameo Was 'Hilarious'

Following his surprise cameo in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok, Matt Damon reveals that he thought his part in the threequel was hilarious and discussed what brought him to the movie.

Prior to the release of Ragnarok, there were rumors that The Departed and Good Will Hunting star had snuck in a role, and fans weren't disappointed by Damon's comedy timing. In fact, it was the promise of a light-hearted adventure that drew the actor to the part.

Speaking to Collider, Damon was asked if he had always wanted to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or if his Ragnarok appearance was a spur of the moment thing:

"Chris just called me up, and Taika called me up, and I’m friends with those guys. They pitched me the idea and I just thought it was hysterical, the idea of basically an intergalactic community theater actor kind of living out Tom Hiddleston’s character’s fantasy. I just thought it was just a great, funny bit, and very easy to do. Those guys were a lot of fun, and Taika runs a really fun set. It was a light lift for me."

The scene in question saw an undercover Loki commission his own telling of the Thor movies - with Sam Neill as Odin, Luke Hemsworth as Thor, and Damon as Loki. Damon's small part in Ragnarok would seemingly rule him out of playing any of the big heroes or villain in the future of the MCU. He has been linked to roles in the past and would seemingly be the perfect addition as a lead role in Phase 4 or beyond. (Damon as one of the X-Men anyone?)

As for playing the trickster god, how did Damon react to stepping into the shoes of Hiddleston? Apparently, Loki himself enjoyed the scene just as much as the audiences did:

"Tom was right there, and Chris was there, and we were all having a good laugh."

It was notably a turn away from Damon's normally stoic roles or playing Jason Bourne, and who knows, there is every chance that this Asgardian actor could return in another Thor movie. That is, if he survived Hela's rampage of destruction through the realm. However, MCU bigwig Kevin Feige certainly seems to think he did. The Grandmaster's ship is presumably now heading toward Earth, so here's betting an out of work Norse actor finds himself among the bunch of ragtag survivors and popping up in Thor 4/Ragnarok 2.

Waititi had promised a fun-filled installment to the Thor saga after the relatively darker Thor: The Dark World, and he certainly delivered on that front. Alongside other brilliant comedy performances from stars like Jeff Goldblum and the titular Chris Hemsworth, Ragnarok set the precedent for how Marvel movies should be made moving forward. You can't blame Damon for being proud of a movie as well-loved as Thor: Ragnarok already is.
