Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Matrix Resurrections.

Lana Wachowski is wrong because The Matrix Resurrections definitely sets up The Matrix 5. The ending of The Matrix Resurrections wrapped up the new story the director — who helmed the film without sister Lilly Wachowski — wanted to tell when revisiting the characters of Neo and Trinity. However, it also leaves the door open for a potential sequel (or spinoff) should Wachowski want to revisit the world of The Matrix once more.

The Matrix Resurrections was a balanced dose of nostalgia and unexplored storytelling that brought back Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) after the former sacrificed himself and the latter died in The Matrix Revolutions. The sequel, the fourth installment in the franchise, is all about second chances, reintegrating into a world that is the same yet different, and the characters’ purpose in it. Neo, who’s reusing the name Thomas Anderson, is back in the Matrix and working as a video game developer. However, he senses there’s something not right and he is validated when he’s found and rescued by Bugs (Jessica Henwick) and Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who alert him to the mystery surrounding his resurrection — a mystery that involves the Analyst, Neo’s therapist in the Matrix.

Wachowski said that making The Matrix Resurrections was for very personal reasons, a way to grieve her parents, who died five weeks apart. Returning to a familiar story and bringing back Neo and Trinity for another adventure was a way for her to process those feelings. When asked whether The Matrix Resurrections could lead to an entirely new trilogy, Wachowski’s response was firmly in the negative. However, just because there might not be a whole trilogy following Resurrections, it doesn’t mean Wachowski could never do The Matrix 5 (which has not been officially confirmed). There are plenty of loose plot threads left hanging in The Matrix Resurrections that a potential sequel could tie up. Here’s how the film sets up The Matrix 5.

Smith Is On The Loose At The End Of The Matrix Resurrections

While Agent Smith — now played by Jonathan Groff — assisted Neo in taking down the Analyst, the character is still very much a wild card. He couldn’t go after Neo in the way he wanted before because he was being controlled by the Analyst, and so he extended a helping hand to his former enemy. However, by the end of The Matrix Resurrections, Smith has regained some control over his actions. Now that he’s a free agent and no longer an ally to Neo and Trinity, it’s possible he could be the primary villain of The Matrix 5 if it happens. It’s clear he wants to antagonize Neo as much as possible. Now that he’s no longer being held back, Smith could reemerge as the villain in a potential sequel. The possibilities are endless.

How Will Neo & Trinity Build A Better World In The Matrix?

Neo brokered peace between the machines and humans in The Matrix Revolutions. While The Matrix Resurrections leaves the machines in the periphery, choosing to focus more on the Analyst and his machinations, the ending sees Neo and Trinity vowing to build a better world by reshaping the Matrix. Of course, this suggests freeing as many people from the simulation as possible. However, it’s a bit of a been there, done that situation. Now that there’s a new Matrix and the real world changes saw several machines side with the humans to work together, The Matrix 5 could answer the question of what exactly a better world means and how it can be done.

There could be an entire storyline of Neo and Trinity working towards change, convincing those who are plugged into the Matrix to leave and giving them a choice the Analyst clearly didn’t want them to have. How that could happen might be left to the imagination for now, but it’s certainly an intriguing enough arc that could be explored further in a sequel to The Matrix Resurrections. After all, the film explained that peace and harmony only lasted so long before and it would be interesting to see how things might be different now that Neo and Trinity are around to spearhead the changes.

The Machines Could Wage An Attack On Io In The Matrix 5

There may have been some peace between humans and the machines following Neo's sacrifice in The Matrix Revolutions, but that didn’t last too long once the machines realized they needed the humans in the Matrix to power themselves. As Niobe warned, war was once again brewing, which is why she didn’t want to join the mission to save Trinity; it would have upset the carefully curated balance between the machines and the human residents of Io (especially following what happened in Zion). Niobe didn’t want what happened to Zion to happen again. However, now that Trinity and Neo have taken over control of the Matrix, the combative machines still looking to control humans could be making plans to attack Io in a bid to stop them from trying to build that better world.

When it comes to peace, it never seems permanent — that is especially true in The Matrix franchise, which saw some changes thanks to the status quo shake-up, but it didn’t remain that way for long. Neo and Trinity once again instigating change and wanting to free people’s minds from the Matrix could increase the tension between the machines and humans more than before. So while The Matrix Resurrections gives the audience (and Neo and Trinity) somewhat of a happy ending, the machines who still wish for control surely won’t allow their actions to go unchecked.

Who Are “The Suits” In The Matrix Resurrections?

Neo and Trinity managed to stop the Analyst and take control over the simulation, but he mentioned reporting to his higher ups (aka, “the suits”). Considering The Matrix Resurrections hinted there were humans in the real world who were working alongside the machines to control humans, The Matrix 5 could reveal them as the suits. Whoever they might be, they clearly want to maintain control over humans in the Matrix so they can continue powering the machines. Setting up a conflict between Neo, Trinity (whose Matrix name is Tiffany), and the suits could unlock yet another unexplored aspect of the story — one that would see a balance of humans and machines simultaneously working together and against one another.

Ultimately, The Matrix Resurrections left enough of the story open-ended to continue if Lana Wachowski so chooses to make another film in the franchise. Not every story has to be tied up all nice and neat, but the world of The Matrix Resurrections proved there is definitely more story to tell. Whether or not The Matrix 5 ever happens is unclear for now, but the possibilities to explore more of Neo and Trinity’s world, or even make a spinoff with Bugs and her crew, are certainly there.
