Starting tonight, fans of The Matrix will be able to stream the original trilogy on Netflix. It's difficult to believe it's been 21 years since The Matrix first came out. The mind-bending sci-fi action trilogy redefined the genre, introduced the world to some of the most memorable visual effects, and rooted itself firmly into cinema history. The first movie, as well as the sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, are iconic films that are loved even today.

Earlier this afternoon, Netflix announced on Twitter the whole trilogy will be available to stream at midnight. The tweet reads, "The Matrix was released 21 years ago today! And at midnight tonight, The Matrix Trilogy will be available on Netflix US." Netflix did not specify in their tweet whether the trilogy is being released at midnight Eastern Time or Pacific Time.

The Matrix sequels greatly expanded on the lore and universe, but never quite lived up to the original film. Nevertheless, the films are still iconic; iconic enough that a fourth Matrix installment is slated to be released in 2021. Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as "The One," Neo in The Matrix 4. Carrie-Anne Moss will return to portray Trinity, and it was also announced that Lambert Wilson will return to play The Merovingian.

While The Matrix 4 currently has a 2021 release date with fans no doubt eager to see it, there is still a chance the original date will be pushed back due to the coronavirus. While there hasn't yet been an official delay on the release, production on The Matrix 4 has stopped at this time. In the meantime, the first three movies in The Matrix franchise are easily re-watchable and will hopefully sustain fans until then.
