Update (Jan 31): Warner Bros. tells us that the next Matrix movie remains untitled.

The official title for The Matrix 4 has potentially been revealed. The Wachowski Sisters took the world by storm at the end of the '90s when they released The Matrix starring Keanu Reeves. The film has become one of the most well-regarded sci-fi blockbusters ever made, resulting in two sequels released in 2003. While The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions weren't able to match the success of the original, the final film in the trilogy effectively ended the story of Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity. Because of the way The Matrix Revolutions ended, fans were shocked to hear that The Matrix 4 was in development.

Lana Wachowski is returning to helm the fourth film in the Matrix trilogy, which brings back Reeves as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity. Fans were understandably puzzled when it was announced that Reeves and Moss were returning since their characters both died in The Matrix Revolutions. Since there isn't a lot known about the story of The Matrix 4, it's hard to generate concrete theories on how the Neo and Trinity are returning, but Reeves did previously reveal that the film will take place after The Matrix Revolutions, confirming that they won't return due to a prequel setting.

Now, the title of The Matrix 4 might be Matrix Resurrection, revealed via leaked-and-quickly-deleted Instagram post. Shunika Terry, a makeup artist for the upcoming Matrix sequel, shared an image of a wrap gift she received for working on the film. A screenshot of her original Instagram post can be seen below, courtesy of Nerding Reviews. Screen Rant reached out to Warner Bros. and HBO Max for comment and they tell us the film remains untitled currently.

Update 2: The domain matrixresurrection.com was registered by Warner Bros. in April 2009 and redirects to a Warner Bros. landing page.

While Reeves and Moss' return was a huge announcement for the film, there are some key players missing in the sequel. Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus was a main character in the first three Matrix stories, but the actor revealed in August that he wasn't asked to return for The Matrix 4. The story of Agent Smith, the antagonist of the original Matrix trilogy, also appears to be officially concluded, with Hugo Weaving not expected to return for the sequel. There have been plenty of other exciting casting announcements, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas set to appear in The Matrix 4.

Matrix Resurrections has not been confirmed to be the title of The Matrix 4, at least officially, but the title would make sense for obvious reasons. Wachowski will have to effectively explain Neo and Trinity's return while also meeting the franchise's high expectations of action and visuals. A  logo for The Matrix 4 was revealed last month, and a few leaked images from the set of the film teased the modern looks of the returning leads. With the movie expected to hit theaters and HBO Max in December, it won't be too long before the official title for The Matrix 4 is revealed when the marketing campaign begins.
