Here's a theory on how Carrie-Anne Moss' Trinity could return from the dead for The Matrix 4. The Matrix is a landmark sci-fi film that blew minds back in 1999. The story featured Keanu Reeves' computer hacker Neo discovering the world is just an elaborate computer simulation, and that in the "real" world the human race is enslaved by machines. He teams with rebels led by Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus to fight back, and discover if he truly is The One prophesied to take down the system for good.

The Matrix mixed fascinating sci-fi ideas with philosophy and threw incredible action sequences into the mix. The movie was also one of the earliest to make use of internet marketing. Sequels The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions were shot back to back with a huge budget, but despite being greatly hyped, audiences were left cold by the follow-ups' murky story and unsatisfying ending. The sequels were also followed by a promotional blitz that encompassed video game Enter The Matrix and anime anthology The Animatrix.

While The Matrix Revolutions was billed as the final chapter, the series will be revived with The Matrix 4 in 2021. Also being resurrected are Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss' Trinity, which should come as something of a surprise, considering they both looked pretty dead by the end of the third chapter. Trinity is killed in the movie's third act after being impaled by debris following a crash, which spars Neo on to Machine City to defeat Agent Smith. For now, plot details about The Matrix 4 and how Reeves or Carrie-Anne Moss will return are being kept secret.

Carrie Anne Moss The Matrix Trinity

So how will Trinity return for The Matrix 4? Well, the answer may lie in 2005's The Matrix Online, which was an ambitious multiplayer game. This MMO was pitched as a canon continuation of the movies with creators The Wachowskis giving creative input. It turns out some major events went down in the Matrix after the trilogy concluded, such as the assassination of Morpheus after he demanded the Machine's hand over Neo's remains. The final story chapters of The Matrix Online before it shut down also featured the return of Trinity - though her resurrection is complicated.

The Matrix Online revealed Neo and Trinity were the results of experiments by the Machines to translated human DNA into code without the need for an interface. The Machines removed Trinity's code from her body and in the game she appears within the Matrix as golden code. The villainous Oligarch - freeborn humans who no longer have real bodies and appear as creepy wireframe figures - want to retrieve this code. The Matrix Online makes it seem like she's wiped out again, however, as she combines with a human to initiate a reboot in the Machine code base.

While the canon status of The Matrix Online is in question - and will likely be ignored by The Matrix 4 - it's possible the movie could recycle concepts from it. Trinity's physical body is dead by the end of the third movie, but it's possible The Matrix Online's notion of the Machines experimenting with turing DNA into code could be how she returns. Trinity might exist within the Matrix itself without a body in the real world, though what role she'll play in the story remains to be seen. It'll be great to see Carrie-Anne Moss step back into Trinity's stylish leather coat, but hopefully, The Matrix 4 will at least attempt to make her resurrection credible.
