A new teaser trailer for The Matrix: Resurrections has revealed another astounding motorcycle-based sequence with Carrie-Anne Moss’s Trinity and Keanu Reeves' Neo. The hotly anticipated fourth installment in The Matrix franchise, Resurrections picks up 20 years after The Matrix: Revolutions. Reeve’s hero mysteriously finds himself back in the artificial world of the Matrix despite his character’s death at the end of the previous film. This new film’s potential explanation for Neo’s return has been the center of much head-scratching and fan debate as the movie’s release date inches ever closer.

Over the past few months, promotion for the film has been steadily ramping up, teasing not only Neo and Trinity’s return, but also new cast members which include Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Christina Ricci, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s alternate version of Laurence Fishburne’s character Morpheus. Throughout all the various teaser trailers, it seems clear that this latest outing deliberately hearkens back to many of the themes and key scenes featured throughout the original trilogy, playing on the in-universe concept that déjà vu is the by-product of a change being made within the digital world of the Matrix. These deliberate call-backs include the training dojo in which Neo was first taught to bend the reality of the Matrix by Morpheus and the iconic scene when Reeves’ character has his mouth sealed shut by Agent Smith.

In another reference to the original trilogy, a new teaser trailer released on the official Matrix: Resurrections’ Instagram account hints at an action-packed sequence with Trinity behind the controls of another Ducati motorcycle. Hearkening back to the iconic motorcycle chase sequence in The Matrix: Reloaded where Trinity seeks to escape with the Keymaker, this new sequence now shows Trinity doubling Neo, who uses his abilities to destroy a car set on a collision course with the pair. While the second and third films in the Matrix trilogy were not anywhere near as well-received as the franchise’s original entry, Trinity’s motorcycle chase in the second film still remains one of the most memorable action sequences in the entire franchise. Fans who have been paying close attention to the various candid behind-the-scenes photos that made their way online from the set would not be surprised to see Trinity and Neo in a new motorcycle stunt, but this latest teaser promises a new sequence sure to rival the second film’s nail-biting chase scene. Of course, exactly how or why Trinity and Neo find themselves being pursued in this latest outing remains to be seen, though it would be safe to assume that the machine’s nefarious Agent programs are behind it.

With the original films setting the bar for visual effects and fast-paced action for a whole new generation of filmmakers in the late 90s and early 2000s, all the signs seem to suggest that director Lana Wachowski is now intent on upping the stakes two decades on. As is to be expected, this latest trailer also continues to raise a raft of questions about how the new film ties into its predecessors, but at least the wait until audiences can find out the answers for themselves is nearly over. Fans can check out Trinity and Neo’s action-packed return when The Matrix: Resurrections is released in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22.
