Does The Matrix: Resurrections have an after-credits scene that sets up The Matrix 5 or another movie? Lana and Lilly Wachowski's The Matrix released in 1999 and upended the sci-fi genre at the turn of the 21st century; the film is hailed by many to be one of the greatest movies ever to release and is praised for not only its special effects but its themes - both subtle and overt - as well.

Unfortunately, much of what made The Matrix special fell by the wayside with its two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, which were filmed back-to-back and released in 2003. Still, an entire world filled with intriguing concepts was left unexplored at the end of the third film, and now Lana Wachowski has returned to tell one more story in this franchise with The Matrix Resurrections. The sequel sees the return of Keanu Reeves as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, along with plenty of new and returning characters. The thing people have been wondering is that is this the first installment in a new trilogy?

The answer to that particular question is no, though there could still be a future for the franchise. And while The Matrix Resurrections isn't starting a new trilogy, that doesn't mean there isn't something for people to enjoy at the end of the movie. The Matrix Resurrections DOES have a post-credits scene; however, it's not something that will launch a new story or tease the future. Rather, it's a scene that's meant to be humorous, akin to what end-credits scenes used to be before they became popularized in the 2000s by Marvel.

Keanu Reeves as Neo in The Matrix Resurrections

The beauty of The Matrix and its world is that it can continuously be revamped and reused to tell new stories, either with Neo and Trinity or new characters. The way the movie incorporates both Morpheus and Agent Smith without bringing back the original actors is inspired, and it's an approach that many other franchises aren't able to take without causing a ruckus. Even if the story of Neo isn't continued, there were five other Ones before him that could get prequel films. It's not too far-fetched considering Warner Bros. has openly stated they're open to making more Matrix films if the Wachowskis are.

If The Matrix were to continue, it would need to find a way to remain relevant and grow with the current genre. The franchise began at a time when films were undergoing a massive transition into bigger, bolder storytelling, and The Matrix was at the forefront of that.
