The Matrix Resurrections posters highlight the film’s eight main cast members. Keanu Reeves returns as Neo in the first new Matrix film since 2003.

Fans were of course left very disappointed by the second and third movies in the original Matrix trilogy, and it was something of a shock when Lana Wachowski revealed she was returning to the world she and sister Lily Wachowski first created to earth-shattering effect back in 1999. Apparently though there is more story to tell in the world of The Matrix, as Neo will be joined in The Matrix Resurrections by Carrie-Ann Moss as Trinity, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus and Jessica Henwick as Bugs, together with Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Erendira Ibarra and Jonathan Groff. Trailers indeed promise a very classically Matrix-like experience from the new film, as Neo once again finds himself being given the choice between the red pill and the blue pill (with whatever new implications that choice has this time around).

Details on some of the Matrix Resurrections’ main characters are indeed being kept under wraps right up to the last minute. However, thanks to eight new character posters, fans can at least get a new glimpse at some of the folks who populate the latest Matrix film. The images are cool looking even if they don’t reveal much about some of the movie’s more mysterious characters. See the images in the space below (via The Matrix Movie):

The posters indeed key in on classic Matrix themes of distorted reality and mind-bending action, while still maintaining an iconic sense of imagery. While it's certain that Matrix Resurrections will indeed delve into territory familiar from the first three films, it's also certain that there will be some new twists and turns along the way, as Wachowski updates the movies' themes and expands them into new areas. Indeed, tonally the new movie is "funnier" than the old school Matrix films, at least according to Morpheus actor Abdul-Mateen. Whether this "funnier" turn changes things up that much, or simply adds different flavoring to an otherwise familiar recipe, remains to be seen.

Ultimately it seems like a bit of a risk to bring back The Matrix almost twenty years after the first trilogy fizzled away in such memorably soul-crushing fashion. Then again, it's now been long enough that the bad taste left in fans' mouths has mostly dissipated. So, perhaps this is actually the perfect time to re-enter The Matrix and find out what other secrets the vaunted sci-fi franchise has to explore. The Matrix Resurrections could indeed end up redeeming the entire Matrix universe, which would be a surprising outcome to be sure.
