New images for The Matrix: Resurrections have revealed the new mystery character played by Jessica Henwick. The long-awaited follow-up to The Matrix Revolutions features returning stars like Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as newcomers like Henwick, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, and Priyanka Chopra. The Matrix 4 is scheduled to premiere on December 22, 2021, simultaneously in theaters and for streaming on HBO Max.

Despite lots of buzz and casting details coming out over the previous months, very little is known about the actual story of The Matrix Resurrections. The title suggests that Moss’s Trinity character seems to be back and very much alive in the new film, despite having died at the end of the original trilogy. Some have also theorized that Abdul-Mateen II’s character may be a young version of Morpheus. As for the new characters, almost nothing has been officially revealed.

Now, thanks to a new series of teaser images, the first look at The Matrix 4, including Henwick’s mysterious character, has been revealed. The photos, taken from the official Matrix Resurrections teaser site and shared to Imgur by user p0rtman87, reveal Henwick in one of the franchise’s signature black leather jackets and sporting a fantastic blue haircut. They show her hiding in some kind of cyber landscape, being pursued by a shadowy figure, flipping down a hallway, and shooting at an unseen foe off-screen. It’s still unclear what exactly the character’s role is, or even what side she’s on, but it looks like she’s more than capable of handling herself.

Given her character’s emotiveness, it seems most likely that Henwick is playing an actual human rather than an agent or some other mechanical aspect of the Matrix. The rest of the Matrix Resurrections teaser footage includes shots of armed military groups, which could be who she’s fighting against in the pictured scenes. Is she an ally of Neo and Trinity? Or is she working for some new third faction? The answers are unclear for now, but they may reveal themselves when the full Matrix 4 trailer releases on September 9.

Henwick’s character is one of many being added to the Matrix universe in Resurrections, hinting at significant shakeups in the inner workings of the franchise’s cyber world. That would make sense, given all that happens at the end of The Matrix Revolutions. Within the canon of the series, the Matrix is continuously rebooting and modifying itself, which serves as an easy way of explaining new stories, conflicts, and design changes. But if Henwick’s character is any indication, the design of The Matrix Resurrections hasn’t changed all that much.
