A new image from The Matrix Resurrections shows Bugs (Jessica Henwick) leading Neo (Keanu Reeves) back down the rabbit hole. Reeves stared in the original Matrix trilogy from 1999 to 2003 as Thomas A. Anderson, a computer hacker better known as Neo who discovers the truth of the Matrix with the help of Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). Now, Reeves is returning for a reboot written and directed by Lana Wachowski, her first in the series made without her sibling, Lilly.

Henwick plays one of the many new characters that will be introduced in The Matrix Resurrections, though not much is known about her character, Bugs. The actor is best known for her roles as Nymeria Sand on Game of Thrones and Colleen Wing on Iron Fist, though she is no stranger to franchise filmmaking given her role, albeit a brief one, in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the X-wing pilot Jess Pava. Henwick also has a few high-profile, big-budget Netflix projects lined up in The Gray Man and Knives Out 2.

Now, a new image from The Matrix Resurrections highlights one of the film's newcomers, Henwick's blue-haired gunslinger Bugs, who is seen leading Reeves' Neo back down the rabbit hole. The scene continues an Alice in Wonderland motif from the original that mirrors the protagonist's awakening to his own world's strangeness. The image was released as part of an EW exclusive that contains new information and multiple images from the upcoming Matrix movie. Set 20 years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions, the fourth film in the series will pick up with Neo, who is now living a seemingly ordinary life in San Francisco under his birth name with no memory of the events of the previous movies. While his therapist (Neil Patrick Harris) prescribes him blue pills, Morpheus (played this time by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), offers him the red pill, which reopens his mind to the wonderful world of the Matrix. Other newcomers to the franchise include Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Christina Ricci.

As originally revealed by the trailer, Henwick's character is named Bugs as a nod to her white rabbit tattoo on her shoulder. This is the same tattoo Dujour (Ada Nicodemou) had in the first Matrix movie, which helped lure Neo to his first meeting with Trinity. Based on this new image, it appears The Matrix Resurrections will continue this metaphor inspired by Alice in Wonderland as Neo, with the help of Bugs, ventures to find out just how deep the rabbit hole goes.
