Toby Onwumere has been cast in The Matrix 4. Nearly 20 years after The Matrix Revolutions came out, Neo will be returning to the big screen in 2022. In August, it was confirmed that Keanu Reeves was returning as Neo for The Matrix 4, with Lana Wachowski back in the director's chair. Since then, Warner Bros. has added a few more people to the cast.
Carrie-Anne Moss was confirmed to return the same time Reeves was, and Jada Pinkett Smith might also return as Niobe. As for new cast members, Aquaman's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will star in a lead role, and Iron Fist's Jessica Henwick may co-star alongside him. Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter) and Neil Patrick Harris will also have roles in The Matrix 4. As of right now, all of the cast members are in unknown roles. The cast is slowly but surely filling out as yet another person has been added.
According to Deadline, Onwumere has been cast in The Matrix 4 in yet another unknown role. Onwumere is a relatively new actor who is known for his recurring role on Empire season 5. He also worked with both of the Wachowski sisters on Sense8 where he played the character Capheus. He is the second newcomer to the Matrix 4 cast this week, as Mindhunter star Jonathan Groff joined the project just a couple days ago.
There's been word of another Matrix movie for years. At one point, it was thought that the franchise might have gotten a reboot with Michael B. Jordan in the starring role. Much to fans' delight, Warner Bros. decided to green light a sequel rather than the reboot. As of right now though, pretty much everything about The Matrix 4 is being kept a secret. The plot probably won't be revealed for quite a while, but Wachowski will have to explain how Neo and Trinity are back from the dead, since both of those characters were killed off in 2003's The Matrix Revolutions.
As of right now, it's anybody's guess who Onwumere will be playing. Rumor has it that Abdul-Mateen II will be playing a young Morpheus, so that role probably won't go to Onwumere (if a young Morpheus is even in the script). It's possible that Onwumere will be playing a completely new character. The movie could introduce a bunch of new characters who could possibly star in a new Matrix series. Reeves has called the script "very ambitious," so the cast and crew on The Matrix 4 will certainly have their hands full these next few years.
