Filmmaker Kevin Smith shares a funny story about working with William Shatner on the upcoming Masters of the Universe: Revolution series. A sequel to Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Revolution will see Smith continue his controversial adult-oriented animated series based on the original 1980s He-Man cartoon. Despite receiving a great deal of critical acclaim, Smith came under fire from some portions of the fanbase for pulling the rug out from underneath their feet with Revelation by seemingly killing off He-Man’s character and focusing more on Teela (voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar).

Earlier today it was revealed that Star Trek veteran William Shatner would be joining the voice cast of the new Revolution series during the Masters of the Universe 40th Anniversary Panel at San Diego Comic-Con. However, it was not revealed what role Shatner would be playing, nor whether he would be appearing in a recurring role. This, of course, is not Shatner’s first turn at lending his unique vocal talents for a film or television project, and over the years the star has racked up an impressive array of voice credits, including his most recent contribution to the 3D animated film Fireheart.

More recently, Smith, who moderated the Shatner on Shatner panel at San Diego Comic-Con, had a funny story to share regarding his work with the actor on the latest season of his Masters of the Universe show. While Shatner was recording dialogue for the series, Smith provided him with direction about the lines via Zoom, only for Shatner to interrupt him and say, “Kevin, soon you can say you had the honor of directing me.” Meanwhile, Smith’s wife, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, was off to the side and quipped that “it took f**king Captain Kirk to shut Silent Bob up.”

Over his almost 30-year career, Smith has managed to work with an astounding list of Hollywood talent on his projects. From his friendship and collaboration with Ben Affleck, through to drawing in the likes of Star Wars’ Mark Hamill to voice Skeletor in his Masters of the Universe cartoon, he is well known for his behind-the-scenes stories, which are often shared in his various podcasts and other media. As an avid fan of all-things pop culture, no doubt Smith has a number of other tales to tell regarding his time working with the Star Trek legend.

Meanwhile, fans can begin to salivate about the possibility of having both Luke Skywalker and Captain Kirk work in the same project. At this stage, however, potential story details and hints about who Shatner has been signed to play remain scant. With the fate of Eternia on the line and potential hints about the evil Horde faction likely to play a large role in the show’s sequel season, fans will likely be keeping their ears close to the ground for more about what they can expect from Masters of the Universe: Revolution.
