Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Netflix and Mattel’s upcoming sequel series to the classic 1980s cartoon, has revealed a bit of its original score courtesy of showrunner Kevin Smith. The new series will be a direct narrative follow-up to the original show, with a star-studded voice cast that includes Mark Hamill, Chris Wood, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lena Headey, Kevin Conroy, and Tony Todd. Masters of the Universe: Revelation will premiere on Netflix in 2021, though no specific release date has yet been announced.

After the immense success of Netflix’s She-Ra and the Princesses of Power series, more original Masters of the Universe content seemed inevitable. Revelation will bring back He-Man, Skeletor, Teela, Mer-Man, and many other familiar faces from the old cartoon to continue the original show's story. Unlike She-Ra, it seems like Masters of the Universe: Revelation will primarily target older fans of the ‘80s cartoon rather than a wholly new, younger audience.

Details for the new show have been hard to come by, save for the voice cast that was announced last year. In a new video tweeted by Netflix, Kevin Smith gave another small glimpse at what’s to come by announcing the series’ composer, Bear McCreary. McCreary has received acclaim for his musical work on shows like The Walking Dead, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Outlander, and Battlestar Galactica. Smith also plays a small musical sample from McCreary in the video – the first draft of the epic theme that will play when Prince Adam invokes the power of Grayskull and becomes He-Man.

Given McCreary’s track record and the little bit played in Smith’s clip, it sounds like Masters of the Universe: Revelation is on the right track musically. Fans are still waiting for a real glimpse at the show’s art and animation, however. Last August, Smith said that fans could expect a proper trailer in six to nine months. The early side of that timeline is approaching quickly, so hopefully, a better look at the new anime will be available soon.

It’s also unclear how Masters of the Universe: Revelation and She-Ra will connect, if at all. Given that Smith’s show will serve as a direct sequel to the ‘80s cartoon and that She-Ra has not been listed as a returning character, it seems unlikely that there will be any canonical overlap. Netflix is reportedly also developing new family-oriented Masters of the Universe content, which could tie in with She-Ra more directly. Masters of the Universe: Revelation releases on Netflix later in 2021.
