Directors Adam and Aaron Nee share an update regarding the Masters of the Universe movie's filming schedule after moving to Netflix. The adventure fantasy franchise revolves around Prince Adam, the heir to the alien planet of Eternia who is granted with the ability to transform into the powerful hero known as He-Man with the use of his Power Sword and the power of Castle Grayskull. Masters of the Universe chronicles the journeys of Adam/He-Man as they battle the evil sorcerer Skeletor and his cohorts in their efforts to conquer Castle Grayskull for themselves and wield its powers to rule the universe.

Masters of the Universe has been adapted for the screen across a number of properties, mostly notably Filmnation's 1983 animated series of the same name, three reboots, Kevin Smith's Netflix sequel series Masters of the Universe: Revelation and acclaimed spinoff She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. The Mattel toy line was first adapted for the big screen with 1987's Masters of the Universe starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor, which was a critical and commercial failure upon release but has since been considered a cult classic. A new Masters of the Universe movie has been in the works for nearly 20 years now, with Netflix having recently acquired the rights from Sony to the project and the film is now finally gaining steam.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant to discuss the adventure rom-com The Lost City, directors Adam and Aaron Nee shared a Masters of the Universe movie filming update. The duo revealed that the fantasy reboot will not begin filming until Spring 2023 due to the time needed to properly prepare for the "huge beast of a movie." See what Adam Nee said below:

"It's coming along great, it'll be next year. Coming right off of Lost City was too tight, it's such a huge beast of a movie that it needs real prep time. So we're working on it now and working towards it starting next spring."

The Nee Brothers first signed on to direct the Masters of the Universe movie in 2018 and have been with the project as it underwent a variety of changes, including multiple script rewrites and casting changes from Noah Centineo to Kyle Allen. After the multiple delays, the project finally gained new ground this past January when Netflix acquired the rights to the movie from Sony and The Path star Kyle Allen was cast as He-Man and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings co-writer David Callaham having penned the new draft with the directing duo. Interestingly, the Masters of the Universe movie filming update from the duo contradicts recent reports that the Netflix title would be kicking off production this June in New Mexico.

Though some fans of the franchise may be disappointed to hear of the longer wait for the film, the Masters of the Universe movie filming update is still sure to come as positive news to some. Rather than choosing to press on ahead only partly prepared, the Nee Brothers are clearly dedicated to properly adapting the unique fantasy world of Eternia for the screen by taking their time determining their vision. With Masters of the Universe not set to film until Spring 2023, it now seems likely that the long-awaited reboot won't hit screens until sometime in 2024.
